Flying MEL-HKG-LHR in around Dec 17/22 and then FCO-HKG-MEL around 17 Jan. What are my chances of getting an upgrade to Business - are those flights likely to be busy or is there a chance of say good deals being obtainable at check-in?

That would be a busy time of the year to travel.

From memory CX do not offer paid upgrades at check-in although a Qantas Platinum/Oneworld Emerald would have a small chance of getting an op-up to business.

I have only ever had 1 CX flight in economy but I have had numerous op-ups on CX from Business to First in Southeast Asia on aircraft that had First Class.

I have been ug a few times from j to f. Never Y though.

Are you on a good ticket?

Not an elite so an op-up would be damn unlikely. Was thinking more cheap specials being on offer at check-in.

CX doesnt offer "special" fare upgrade, Op Up is more likely during high seasons with status.
My personal experience is about 75-80%, provided that you do your "homework" and plan your trip ahead.

The chance of being op up is also route / demographic dependent.

I hear CX treats 1W elites well, possibly even giving you better op-up odds, assuming you're an elite ;)

I was always treated well when I lived in the big noodle and was one of their elites there....even now as an Emerald and not in territory, they have more respect for status than most other OW carriers IMHO.

Though their own FFP the MPC is a bit hit and miss. :p

That's good to hear. Got a few J flights on CX coming up (LAX-HKG-KUL-HKG-SYD) shortly. :) Not sure if some of them have F, but I presume the LAX-HKG and HKG-SYD would.

Cheers,
- Febs.

LAX-HKG is likely to be 3 classes, but not HKG-SYD.

Which demographics?
- country of origin
- passport
- age / sex
- other?

One of the example will be the Country of embarkation:
In HKG, there are many MP Diamonds and they have higher op up status compared to OW E on CX metal. So you will be less likely to get upgraded ex HKG compared to ex SYD on the same route.

Occasionally 3-class a/c fly to MEL and SYD, never BNE or PER though :p
Not entirely correct...;)

Did manage to score one about 12 months ago (A343) back to PER, although I think the fact that Twiggy Forrest was on board may have had something to do with it?

Febs, check seat plans but should have F. CX are very much a five star airline
Cheers

Ah, I see. Thanks for the example. Makes sense.

They have to get home!
