Hi Frequent Flyers.

Has anyone ever been upgraded only on the second part of QF1 or QF2, when flying all the way between Sydney and London through Dingapore (or Dubai a few years ago) I can see that a the time of requesting the upgrade online, there such an option to be considered for an ongate upgrade. In practice I never got it. I either get a full upgrade betwwen LHR and SIN, or nothing (WP)

Anyone with positive experience? When do you find out? Do you have to voluntary ask at the lounge in SYD or LHR or SIN? Do you just find out when you scan your boarding pass? Do you get called in the boarding area while people wait for boarding?

Thanks for your feedback.

My husband has put a request in for J to F on his Syd to LHR in Nov online.
He is flying from Syd to LHR on QF1.
Is that what you mean ?
He will hope to find out the day before he leaves , he is a platinum.
The only time he had an upgrade at the gate it was operational

Hi Chris, yes I’ve been upgraded from Business to First quite often if I have applied for a points upgrade o operational upgrades. sometimes you find out when you check-in and are given two different boarding passes but more commonly when you scan your boarding pass for the 2nd leg.

If I’ve requested a points upgrade the points deducted are obviously less than the full trip....

I never know if i would been upgraded for free if I hadn’t made the request....

Yes I have had this multiple times in both directions. Strictly speaking my last one SIN-SYD was an op-up but all previous both through DXB and latterly SIN were “points upgrade at the gate”.

Thanks, so the magic happens when scanning at the gate in Singapore right? On my upcoming SYD -> LHR I see that J are almost gone one the SYD SIN section of QF1, but I see many J left on the SIN LHR section, so I hope I will get something at least on the second part.

Wait, what is an op upgrade? Is that a free upgrade without requesting, so essentially a free upgrade?

An operational upgrade aka OPUP is extremely rare but given when the flight is oversold and there is a need to move passengers around. For example there is one passenger too many for economy and one seat in first class.

Unless the last Y pax is extremely valuable they're not getting the F seat. What happens is that the most valuable Y pax will be moved to the next class and the pax in that seat will be moved to the next class and so on. If there were any unfilled point upgrade requests that can be utilised they will be done.

It is rare and when I was WP1 I was given an OPUP from J-F when flying LAX-SYD.

Thanks all, turns out I got the full upgrade SYD->LHR
I was thinking that for the next trip, I should try to fly to SIN on a non QF1, and then catch QF1 to LHR. That way I decouple the upgrade of the two sector, and get more chances to get an upgrade on both (I think).

Any thoughts?
