Upgrade query

hi, i'm on QF128 from HKG to SYD tomorrow. i put in upgrade request from Y to J, and ticked the box for PE if J not available. upgrade to PE has been confirmed but Expert Flyer shows a number of seats free in J. rang QF to check if J upgrade request still in system and was told that as PE confirmed, J upgrade request now off the table. did ticking PE if J not available impact on my chances for J upgrade?
 
I don't think so - I've ticked PE if J unavailable three times SIN-LHR and got J every time.

If the flight takes off with empty J seats i'd possibly be emailing QF politely asking them what happened?

A tad strange..

I've done exactly the same as you with flights. The one thing that I find off putting is going into manage my booking and have it tell me an upgrade to PE has been requested. Hell no I've asked for a J upgrade not PE! :rolleyes:

I've also experienced being able to select a J seat apparently due to upgrade clearing but then found myself sitting in PE. Although that was before the enhanced upgrade experience.

My booking shows the same....I hope they haven't lost my J request.
 
just called QF and been advised that if i "didn't want to be considered for PE i shouldn't have selected it". explained the wording on the upgrade site indites that PE can be selected as backup in case J is not available, but the QF person said that was incorrect interpretation.

That is wrong. When I go into the details of my booking, it shows that Premium Economy has been requested. However, if I go back a step to where the page lists all my bookings and select the Upgrade link next to my flight, it states that I have requested Business Class and that Premium Economy will be requested if Business is unavailable. As far as that page is concerned we have not "incorrectly" interpreted at all.

This is the problem with the whole process. It clearly says do you want PE is unsuccessful with J. What's happening now with the new upgrade experience with multiple upgrade checks? Do they run the first check, decide that you're unsuccessful for J, process the backup for PE (successfully), and then wipe the J request taking you out of the subsequent upgrade rounds?

I think it is perfectly reasonable to say that if you can't give a J upgrade, I'll like to take a PE upgrade without having the PE upgrade override consideration for J.

Fully agree - maybe this is an unforeseen consequence of the new "multi-pass" regime.

Latest update for those who are interested.

At check in, I explained my situation to the Customer Service Agent. They advised that if W seats run out then no more upgrades can be made. I was fine with that but did say that I understood the new upgrade system to work differently - but clearly I am not purporting to be an expert. CSA called supervisor and they discussed. Said they'd check what points had been deducted and that if PE points deducted then would have to fly PE. Checking points tools some time but they suggested I go through and they would page me in the First Lounge if there was a change. Resigned to a PE seat I went through. After a shower I was paged an found a J seat waiting for me. Really appreciate the help of the HKG ground team - was really very nice of them to go out of the way to resolve.
