Apologies if this has been discussed before - I did a search but couldn't find anything.

I have received quite a few complementary on departure upgrades with Qantas in the last two months and was trying to work out if anyone knew what the upgrade references meant on my Frequent Flyer statement. This morning I did a points upgrade and received the same code as my comp upgrade, so I am now a quite confused - and thinking it may have to do with where you are upgraded from (ie front desk, lounge, boarding gate etc). Here are a few of the codes from the few weeks.

QF 565 ECONOMY/BUSINESS 14SEP11 SYDNEY/PERTH
UPGRADE REF 5GL67L (points) at lounge

QF 492 ECONOMY/BUSINESS 11SEP11 MELBOURNE/SYDNEY
UPGRADE REF 5GL67L (comp.) at lounge

QF 455 ECONOMY/BUSINESS 28AUG11 SYDNEY/MELBOURNE
UPGRADE REF 2SMS9C (comp.) at check-in

QF 776 ECONOMY/BUSINESS 15AUG11 PERTH/MELBOURNE
UPGRADE REF 5WAUBO (comp.) at lounge

QF 583 ECONOMY/BUSINESS 07AUG11 SYDNEY/PERTH
UPGRADE REF 5TI8VU (comp.) at check-in

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

The references look like your booking reference number. I'd guess you have the same reference number for two flights because they are on the same booking? (i.e. outbound and inbound flights.)

Thanks very much - never thought to check the book references for the flights... Next question then - do you know if Qantas have changed their comp. upgrade policy. I would have had 1-2 comp. upgrades a year - now I am getting 1-2 a month. Competition is always a great thing in the market place...

that is your Amadeus record locator. You can see it when you log into your frequent flyer account and look at "your bookings"

That is a lot of upgrades

I do fly quite a bit - but all domestic and economy. Just made Partner Gold for the first time. Hopefully the comp. upgrades keep happening - always nice when they reward loyalty.

With frequent travel like that, maybe your PCV has put you in front of most others for these involuntary upgrades. I note you are booked in ECONOMY, not DISCOUNT ECONOMY so that should help with your PCV as well.

Upgrade reference:

Dear Qantas,

Please give this fellow an upgrade; he is an awefully nice chap, is kind to kittens and helps out in old folks homes.

Hahahaha
