Just wanting to clarify. I know you need to be at least gold to upgrade using points on long haul but I also note it has to be virgin operated. So is it possible to upgrade a flex fare to business Sydney Abu Dahbi?

Thanks

YES as long as you are on VA29 only

Yes can confirm - I've used points on the reverse route (VA30 I think) in a couple of weeks time

Fly out tomorrow to London but it's Etihad metal so sadly no upgrade options :(

Would be curious to hear how the two compare. Ive had a bit of a look at the long haul virgin VA29 and it looks like Etihad and Virgin J class are chalk and cheese.

Yep, very different styles of service. Both good -- EY are more formal, VA are more laid back. EY hard product definitely better, personally prefer the F&B on VA (but EY has good F&B as well).

I'm about to do VA29/30 in April next year.

I've done VA1 in Y & am getting an exit row on my upcoming trip. I've done VA2 in an exit row & would love to do VA29 and/or 30 in J on points. I've just got enough points for one way at the moment in J. If I had to choose one way only, would I choose 29 or 30? Hmmm.

Take the overnight flight if you have to choose.

The best benny of business over economy on these flights is the flat bed, even if not completely horizontal.

This is something Ive been trying to clarify too re. the beds. I had come to the conclusion that the beds on the VA29/30 were a horizontal fully flat bed!? Not so?

As I mentioned in the VA DSC thread, I've got this trip coming up in June & I've also got a MEL - PER - MEL in April. At the moment, I only have 46k points. But I'll have a whole heap more coming with my flights & spending in early 2014. Ideally, J on all 4 sectors would be good but it sounds like the first one I should get is VA30?

Ive been having a look at availability. The virgin operated VA29/30 look hard to find. The Etihad operated flights appear more available for the same route.

There's a lot more EY metal than VA metal on that sector.

Looking at a website, Aviability - VA29 Flight Schedule, VA29 leaves SYD three times a week for AUH (Tues/Thurs/Sat).

In the reverse direction, VA30 leaves AUH on Mon/Wed/Fri. Aviability - VA30 Flight Schedule

February is an exception as reported elsewhere here as a 777 is out for maintenance.

Ive had a hunt looking for award seats in J . Im not looking to fly until 2015 so have just been looking at availability and playing with dates and I haven't been having much luck finding a VA29/30 J seat.
