UpgradeMe pricing and success

Hamilton Island - Because it's easier I would say. I often refer to the airport code when speaking about where I am going.

Note: I have MEL-OOL for next Friday. Minimum bid of $270 for each passenger. No thanks VA.

I have been flying for years and never once have taken notice of the airport code. Its not as if when you book you select the airport code. So if its a destination you have never been to then no one would have a clue what it is. Seems silly to me. If we are all so time poor that we have to use abbreviation's then I guess we should start typing like 13 year olds on sms ;) I c u q t tomoz whatevs

It would have to be very obscure for me to not use the airport code when booking.

Sorry I dont follow-how could saying Gold Coast be more obscure?

Your argument isn't going to gain much traction around here old-bean. Besides, its fun using IATAs and pondering how they came about. OOL is clearly cOOLangatta. I'm working on a US trip right now and you do wonder about IAH (Houston) and IAD (Washington). I also quite like FAT as well, and I'm planning on going there. Fresno, CA.

Yeah I figured as much-seems to come across as a bit of an annoying 'in the know' club type thing to differentiate or ostracise outsiders, especially new a to the site. Really can't see the purpose of it.

That being said I am also a pilot and could blow your hats off with special abbreviations if that's what really floats your boats..perhaps I could be really different and refer to it as its ICAO abbreviation of YBCG...of course that wouldn't be very helpful to those not 'in the know' ;)

Really can't see the purpose of it.
The purpose of this thread I believe, is to discuss VAs UpgradeMe bids. Interesting sideline debate, but perhaps to keep this thread pertinent, you could accept others disagree and just let it ride?

I just want to understand how it would be more obscure to NOT refer to the airports via their IATA code. Would a ICAO code be less obscure? Would saying Gokd Coast be more obscure. Point taken though and don't want to detail-will start a new thread to have this question answered

Hi All

First time using the "Upgrademe" bid for Virgin (normally fly Qantas)

Planning to upgrade VA474 BNE to PER - the flight operates "the business" and doesn't seem to be overly booked at the moment

What do you think would be a fair bid with reasonable chance of success? Starts at $430 - I've currently got it set at $450

How long before the flights were the bids accepted?

I just submitted a bid for BNE-MEL for the min bid of $150, also on Amex comp flight - hoping it gets accepted before Nov 20 (flight is Dec 2), to also trigger $30 credit by Amex! Though I think I submitted the wrong credit card expiry date!

Only a day or two. No where near 12 days, I'm afraid.

Bid accepted about 48 hours before flight. Bid was minimum.

As another data point, MEL-BNE last Friday morning, min. bid was $250 - did not bid. Also an Amex comp. flight.

You can go in and modify your credit card details at any time.
Though I did the same thing once and I got an email saying I was successful, but the transaction failed. It gave me a link to update the credit card details and it processed the following day.

Could not find how to modify the card details - could modify bid amount (or cancel bid), but not card details. Luckily details were correct.

Received my first UpgradeMe bid offer for my SYD-MEL rtn flights next week. The lowest bid for SYD to MEL is $190 and the lowest bid for MEL to SYD is $140.

Wouldn't be taking advantage of it as I wouldn't get too much more other than a meal and the single side J seat on the E90 (have access to lounge and priority baggage/boarding courtesy of Explore Gold).

I've been a rubbish husband lately (working too much, negleticing house work) so just put in a bid for:

SYDNEY to MELBOURNE for this Friday 28 for $155

then

MELBOURNE to SYDNEY on the Saturday 29 for $190

Could anyone guess if I'll be a success? Guessing it's a total waste of money at these prices (?) but really wanted to treat the wife. And we've both NEVER gone business, so we'll both be very excited.

When do they let you know you've won?

Hope all is feeling happy. x

Hubby and I both did bid upgrades on DRW-PER. One on Tuesday 17/1 and the other one on Sunday 22/1.
Both bids were the lowest possible, $230 and both successful.

Didnt want to bid on the outbound one because of the risk of one being upgraded and the other one not as we did single bookings. Still worked a charm :) Would definitely do that again.

I'm sorry, but I would never see bidding to fly a nicer class as a waste of money. I'd happily bid to fly J from Sydney to Parramatta if there was such a flight.

Hope you get your upgrade and have an AWESOME flight!

I fly fairly often and the family think I'm so lucky and they miss out, so I've been tending to use the upgrademe bids to make up for it a bit. They enjoy it.

Hope you realise that bringing home an upgrade SYD-MEL is not going to excuse the neglect. First class return to LHR might temporarily excuse it
The neglect has been recorded and an upgrade won't erase it.

I have a booking coming up with 2 travelers booked. This is the price quoted below. The wording is confusing, is this the per pax price or the total?
I've placed bids on this route before for 1 and its been half of this, so my guess is this is total for 2 of us.

Can anyone confirm? I really don't want to have the "pleasure" of being successful if its going to cost us $4200 one way.

Normally it's per person, but you still have another page to go that quotes you the total, so feel free to click and see what it says.
Guessing it's just an expensive upgrade at this point for some reason.

Unless they've recently changed, it's definitely per pax, so $4200 would be your winning bid. In my experience, that min. price does not change between now and the flight. I'm not sure how they arrive at the minimum amount (booked loadings and current availability I guess), but often I laugh and close the page. I'd be quickly closing the page on that joke!

Put the minimum bid ($130) in for both flights-

VA544 2 June 19:05 OOL SYD - Successful, notified 31/05 - cabin was full
VA535 5 June 17:10 SYD OOL - Successful, notified 2/06 - cabin 50% full

Both flights were originally discount economy for about $100 each, so I was pretty happy with it :-)
