Upgrades with QFF

free - or using points? Free ones never ime - using points sometimes

Using QFF points for upgrades on international flights.

I haven't flown Qantas for years but thought that I would get the ANZ Frequent Flyer VISA/AMEX, specifically so I could fly Qantas and take advantage of the upgrades.

After reading some of the posts on this forum I am starting to think that getting upgrades may not be as easy as I had originally imagined.

Very hard espically if no status. And you do not know until a few hours before the flight. For Qantas always expect to travel in the class you buy

Use the points earned on the credit card to book award flights in business class then you do not need to worry about the upgrade lottery.

Are upgrades easy to get on any airline? If upgrades were that easy then no one would purchase business class tickets and just rely on upgrades.

It depends on the route, the flight number, and the time of year.

As others have said, if your determined to travel in J, buy a J ticket (using points). That way you know you have J and your not left wondering until the last minute.

Are upgrades from Y to J on QF international flights easy to get?

More information is required - such as
  1. what status you have with the QFF programme - the higher status, the greater the greater the possibility.
  2. what class of ticket you have/will buy also affects outcomes - discount eceonomy is less likely to be upgraded than full fare economy.
  3. what flights you intend to take - other more knowledgeable members will be able to advise which flights on which days have the greater likelihood of upgrades, as well.
Basically, if asking if it is easy - the answer is likely to be NO. If you are asking if it happens, then YES - we've received points upgrades on most of our flights over the past years, though never been offered an op-up.:( But there are a number of variables to take into consideration. Especially if there is Y+ seating: QFF normally only upgrades one level of flight - so Y to Y+, Y+ to J, etc - not necessarily firmly fixed, mind you.

So the advice of others here to buy the J class ticket using points is good advice unless you are willing to engage in the upgrade lottery - which gets back to previous questions/comments.

Good luck!

I don't have any status as I don't fly Qantas as the price tends to be much higher than the competitors.

I was planning on using them as my preferred airline even if it cost a little more due to the potential to earn points (shopping, credit card etc) at home. Those points could of then been used to upgrade.

It appears from what I have been told here that I would have to be very selective about my choice of flight to increase my chance of an upgrade.

Thanks for you help

Give us some examples our Routes you hope to upgrade on.

EG PER-SIN = great change for NB to upgrade.
EG SYD-LHR = almost no chance for a NB to upgrade.
