Hi,

I'm a platinum Qantas card holder. I'd like to know, which airline within the oneworld group is most likely to give me a free international upgrade? Any tips on how to get one?

Regards

J

Welcome to AFF!

If you are a Qantas Platinum then stick with QF as they are the ones most likely to give you complimentary upgrades due to your status. CX has also been known to treat other Oneworld Emeralds well but that does not guarantee that you will get an automatic upgrade.

As for tips on how to get upgrades. Things like dressing nicely, having status, booking flights that are likely to be full (school holidays, Easter etc) may help. When you find the secret then please let us know.

Here is a tip on what not to do though. Do not ask (even nicely or jokingly) for an upgrade at check-in. You are almost guaranteed not getting an upgrade. And yes I know some people have been successful by asking but that is generally frowned upon by most check-in staff.

Hi jonny123, welcome to AFF and thanks to JohnK for his good advice...

If you do find the secret of the free op ups please let me know as i have been in the QF programme since 1991, am into my 4th year as a WP and was SG for 5 years prior to that but in all the years with QF my free op ups are in single figures, I reckon the upgrade fairy just flat out doesn't like me!!

in all the years with QF my free op ups are in single figures ..

Scozzie - you're doing better than me - my free op-ups are a very nice round number! Mind you, I thought I had scored one this time - SYD - LHR - the upgrade came through without any points being taken (had requested a points upgrade) - but no, the points came off later. Still better to be flying F than not flying F at all!

jonny123,

Welcome to AFF.

As JohnK points out QF is the best for you as your status is with them. Having said that then do not hold your breath for upgrades. I have had one :!:

There is a thread called the Op-Up thread that you may wish to check out.

Yes, welcome AFF.

Beware of the Op-Up thread! It can be distressing to watch the sometimes very good fortune of some :p

Indeed, F would be fantastic but I have never been op upped beyond J and the last time being Jan '08 from Beijing to Sydney.
Way back in another life I did once get to fly First, on an Air Gabon 747 from Luanda to Paris, 1992 I think it was but it was not the F cabin as we know it today!

I don't think there is an logic to it..... I am Gold Elite (top level) with NZ and have ONLY been upgraded there with points/certificates.. (not actually complaining of course!).. NEVER got an upgrade on any other *A flights.. only ever got E+ on UA for free once....

..and yet... as a QF NB I got bumped from J to F on CX.... The key there was apparently that I was travelling alone.... FWIW

In my experience, I have NEVER had an op-up on BA, AA or JL. I have received op-ups on CX about 50% of the time that I have not already been booked in the highest cabin. I estimate my "hit rate" was QF was more like 5% for international flights when travelling as a QF Platinum FF member, and about the same when travelling as an AAdvantage Executive Platinum member.

A colleague of mine managed to get an free upgrade from bus to first for him and his wife with QA. I'm going to Hong Kong end of Oct so i'll keep an eye out for business specials. I'll be traveling with a dwarf so maybe the counter staff will look after us. Thanks for the advice all.
