I will soon be flying a lot more domestic sectors out of Newcastle. On the "upgrade me using points" page of the VFF website it says that upgrades out of Hobart can be requested at the priority check in counter because there is no lounge in Hobart.
As there is also no lounge in Newcastle is the option to upgrade using points out of Newcastle likely to be able to happen. I asked on a flight out in late 2016 and was told it wasn't possible.
