I currently hold the standard Qantas American Express Discovery card (picked it up for the bonus points a while ago).

I'm a little disappointed with the service I've been receiving from Westpac of late so I'm looking to ditch my Earth Platinum Plus and try to upgrade my Amex to the Ultimate card. However, the timings not good as I'm in the process of changing jobs/buying a new house/all those things that make me look temporarily poor!

If I ask to upgrade to the Ultimate card, will this just be a product transfer or will Amex treat it as a new application and run another credit check?

Will be treated as new and another credit check will be done.

When I upgraded from an old no annual fee gold card to Platinum Edge about 18-24 months ago, they did a credit check, but I rang and they checked my account history, then sent an abridged form that only required my name, address, existing card number and income (single figure only).

I did this tuesday, credit check was done wednesday, most card providers have a product switch form that avoids a new application process, not sure if amex has this. I wanted to try my luck with the bonus referral points even though existing customers are not eligible.

Received an offer to go from Amex reserve (no flights in option) to the Amex Ultimate this week. Form wants personal details, QFF number, contact details, home details, & tick if I want max credit limit available to me.
They are allso telling me it is a bargain!:o

I called AMEX about this kind of offer and was told that it would be treated as a new application, and there is no guarantee that application will be approved even with the invitation offer.
