In reply to "beating the odds" FFG 4/3. We have beaten the odds especially option 2 & we are only bronze. For the past 3-4 years we have purchased a rtn economy ticket to the States (BNE-LAX) & then requested & received an upgrade to Business on both legs. Last year we requested only Premium Economy which we received & hey still biz seats just not the frills of the "finer dining" biz class along with less points.

So for us option 2 has always worked :D

I post only in the hope some of your luck rubs off on me and I get my J upgrade on QF 93 this sunday :D

You're far more likely to get them on BNE-LAX than MEL/SYD-LAX or MEL/SYD-LHR as it's primarily a leisure route from BNE (like SYD-SFO).

Also, it'll depend on which flight you're booked on. Some of the SYD-LAX flights are crammed with WP's, BNE-LAX, not to much:)

Yes, I've struggled to get myself upgraded from MEL to LAX this year however no problems upgrading bronzes from BNE to LAX. It has crossed my mind to route my travel MEL-BNE-LAX as cost is almost same but there is extra travel involved.

I don't doubt it for a minute!

Trans Pacific in the last 18 months I have been op-upped 3 out of 6 flights. I used points upgrades the other times.

If there are op-ups happening, any points upgrade request would surely happen first.

Sorry to sound a bit slow, but what is this "option 2" you talk of? :)
