For those eligible for US credit cards, Chase has a BA Signature VISA offer:
- USD 99 annual fee
- Spend $1,000 within 3 months - get 50K Avios.
- Then within the year, spend $10K get further 25K Avios, and spend further $10K for further 25K Avios.

So it's essentially $99 for 50K Avios (assuming you can find a way to spend $1K on the card).

At 4,500 Avios for a QF domestic SYD-MEL (+AUD20 tax), that doesn't seem that bad of a deal (for those who can get the card and assuming my info is correct).

Opening the mail in Los Angeles is always a treat when I get there. We generally receive at least 4 US credit card offers as well as cosmetic dentistry and medical to fix the smile and the nuisance fat spots. Of course then there are food offers that would help reverse all that specialist work.
We settled on a US Premier Rewards card from Amex and I am thinking of getting a Visa or MasterCard based upon what the Frugal Travel Guy has suggested in his blog. In the US all my local traders take Amex so I have not needed to rush.
Once you get one card issued you get flooded with offers in the mail.
i have a Nordstrom credit card to pick off sale items a week before the hoards hit the place up so I find I can save a bunch on dressier clothing when their sale is starting.
Chase is a card that looks pretty good.
You need to work on getting a credit file in the US if you go there a lot. You can get Amex to transfer one of your cards to the UK or USA if you live/ work there. Getting a Social Security card in the US is more difficult and I stay in touch with a fellow AFFer who is going through this process this year. He has incorporated a business to become an employee would be the broad idea.
Because we do not borrow money in the US we cannot get my Experian credit score to move up closer to the perfect 830 top score but I have stopped worrying about that.
Delta,US Air and American have all sent us juicy looking offers with big sign up offers so you have to tailor the offers to your actual requirements.

For those that can get US credit cards, there are a multitude of steady offers gain points, at a much higher rate than can be achieved in Australia for all sorts of FF programs.

However as 99%, or probably 99.9%, of AFF members cannot get get such cards, there is IMO little point in listing all of these offers on this forum. Instead it is probably best and simplest for those that can get US Credit cards to read Flyertalk and like forums.
