Having booked 'mistake' fare SYD-LAX-SYD off Orbitz, my dilemma now is choosing destination other than Los Angeles.

Considering one of 3 Sans: Frisco, Diego, Antonio. Stay is 3 nights over June long weekend. Have been to SFO, not the other 2.

May consider other cities I haven't yet been to - leaves out Vegas, Dallas, Miami, DC, NYC, Chicago. Haven't stayed in Denver.

Any suggestions?

Please tell.
Or is this the QF fare from ages ago.

What are you interested in?

Anchorage is always good for a F-run and very different.
Boston, New Orleans or San Diego, even Charlotte would be my choices out of your not list

New Orleans? Really enjoyed my few days there a couple of years ago. Also loved Philadelphia (am a huge American history nerd.)

Both San Antonio and San Diego are on the plan for the next trip so can't provide feedback on either, and while the Golden Gate Bridge is probably the most breathtaking tourist attraction I've seen, San Francisco is easily my least favourite of the US cities I've visited so no help on your original thoughts.

It was a 'deep discount' VA fare booked on Orbitz.

Gitcha. That one. Would have been useful to say a Non-available VA fare

I loved Fort Worth, TX. Same distance from DFW as Dallas. A few solid days of tourist attractions, shopping at Grapevine Mall on your way back to DFW to fly home.

Considered Seattle? Nice city for a short stay, great views of Mt Rainier. Some worthwhile outings - boat trip or ferry ride across Puget Sound, Boeing Factory tour. In that part of the world Vancouver also not out of the question.

If only 3 nights, I'd tend to avoid anywhere on east coast, and certainly avoid anywhere you need to connect to get to. Last thing I'd want to do (unless doing status run) is spending 2x8 hrs flying/transitting.

The fare is irrelevant because I'm seeking ideas about destination.

Not interested in status run.

Hoping accommodation will be by SPG points.

Have you considered visiting Hearst Castle? It is half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco. An absolutely fascinating place the likes of which will never be built/assembled again.

Plus it's a great drive.

Went to San Antonio a few years back. More laid-back than I expected particularly along the river edge. Quite a military population. The Alamo is good for a half day. The Spurs are a decent basketball team

Having said that, I prefer San Franciso

If one of the three Sans, Francisco I could go to every holiday and in fact call in there every year. Diego is good and a simple drive to get there. That would be my pic. Less hassle of airport security and makes it a more relaxing few days which for me the important bit.

I've been to SF a couple of times, not my favourite US city, but yeah looked around it and seen some of the sites such as Alcatraz, taken some nice photos of Golden Gate Bridge and several other areas around the city.. A drive from LA to SF or vv is on the cards some time..

I do like San Diego, often nice whether right by the coast and just drove down there from LA with my son in Jan, took him to the zoo, seaworld and the large aircraft carrier parked in the harbour...

New Orleans can be fun, but helps to have someone to go with or meet there for a bit of revelry on Bourbon Street...

Seattle was intereting by the bay/inlet sort of thing and yes i did a Boeing tour, pity no NFL season so no Seattle Seahawks playing...

Vancouver is quite pretty, nice city to walk around...

Haven't been to San Antonio and only briefly stopped in at Dallas so Texas is something I will have to do a bit more...

Lots of interesting cities on the East Coast, but yes with only a few days might eat up a bit of it travelling there...

I booked one of these VA fares for late April to Early May (10 days or so), and if i don't use at least a bit of it for a status run the thought occurred to me to fly to say Chicago and hire a campervan or car or something and do a road trip across the top of the States to Seattle, go past Mt Rushmore etc..

Last year with about 4-5 days i hired a car out Las Vegas and drove around some of the national parks in Utah and Arizona, some pretty scenery once you get out on the open road... :)

Nashville - grown ups Disneyland - so many bars - so many quality musicians - who needs sleep!

Do not miss Bluebird Café - this is where Taylor Swift and Garth Brooks amongst many others stars were 'discovered'.

Looks like San Fransisco is out. And SPG requires 20k points per night to secure their better accommodation.

San Diego, San Antonio or another city away from the east coast. My choice may also depend on airfare.

Chicago has the blues festival over the weekend but i saw the list of artists and except for a few old names they don't excite me.

Zoo and theme parks not my liking. Just want to relax and explore without having to drive.

Amarillo, Texas.

Do the big steak challenge:

The Big Texan Steak Ranch

Was there mid 2015.

Great shopping as well.

Was there in December.
Did not attempt the challenge.
Saw one lad try, and fail (up on stage with spotlight on, punters taking his picture as he waded through the beef).
Can also see the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo (but hopefully no blizzard like we got caught in!)

I actually like all 3 Sans, and will be back in San Diego late next week (QF 'deep discount' Orbitz fare)

Yeah San Diego from the couple of times i've been there does seem nice, its probably one of the few places over there that I would consider moving to and living there....
