I'm thinking of using my $400 credit on my Reserve card to part pay for a car rental in France. Has anyone had any hassles renting a car through the AmEx Online travel portal as against going direct to the rental companies? With the credit, the rental charge will reduce from $675 to $275 which would be handy, but there is stuff-all information about excess reduction in there. There's no way to modify online.
Do French rental locations charge big dollars for $0 excess? If you rely on AmEx insurance's excess reduction, I heard they take the whole amount after an accident or theft and sort it out later with American Express. But that takes time.
