Using expiring miles

I have some Etihad miles expiring in January.

I'm highly unlikely to be able to travel on Etihad by then, or book anything. There are 47000 in a family membership (for some reason my partner's 20,000 or so disappeared when Etihad emailed her 18 months ago telling her they needed to audit her account, and she didn't reply.)

Obviously I can go shopping in their online shop.

But could I book Virgin tickets to somewhere and then change the booking? We're not likely to be in a position to travel anywhere by air for a while, so I'd be unable to settle on a date, but I get that I'd have to choose a destination! Could I make a booking then change the date?

I would either buy the cheapest earphones available on the Etihad Rewards website (2450 miles I think).

You can also buy the minimum amount of miles (1000 - USD 20) to reset the expiry date ?

There is also their new option 'Miles Booster' to boost the number of miles that you have already credited to your account.
Just had a look, and my previous credit activity was VA ROK-BNE - and it only cost 5.83 USD to get 324 miles.

Any activity recorded on your account (credit/redemption) resets the 18 months expiry date on your account.

A VA redemption is 6900 miles minimum + taxes and I would recommend to keep those miles in your account once you know where you would like to go.

There is also a EY Service Fee that seems to add up if you change a redemption (AUD25 as per their schedule). I never got charged any fee for booking but I also never edited an award ticket.
I cannot find their policy for Covid19 flexibility but if I recall correctly, you were able to edit/cxl free of charge.

Or transfer 1000 miles from AMEX or any other partner.

Hope this is helpful

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Oh wow, I didn't know I could reset the expiry date.

Not sure if that will work for the kids' accounts?

I've been transferring everything to Velocity, as there seemed a better prospect of using the points there, but I'll check what you've suggested and try it

I would believe that it would also work for a kid account. just like any other account.

Let us know if anything works!

Irish Pete my apologies for piggy backing on you question but I am in a similar situation. Thibault thank you for this information.

I was thinking of buying the minimum points to reactivate the expiring points for another 18 months. Is it correct the new points can only be used for flights? (I believe I read this somewhere but can’t find it now]. Is this the same if I earn points by hotel stay prior to expiry? The initial points were earned on flights. I wanted to use these points next year on hotels overseas? Can I still do this or do they need to be used for flights?

Any clarification much appreciated.

I'm not sure what limitation you're referring to but you can use your Etihad miles in any way you like.

Thanks. I thought I read somewhere that purchased points can only be used for flights. I cannot find that now. Thanks for clarifying.
