Thinking of using QFF points on Jetstar Mel to Bkk.
Cost of flight Jetstar $402 or 30000 points
Cost of flight QF approx $900 or 36000 points (via Sydney and extra 2 hrs)

Appreciate any thoughts re: worthwhile using points for Jetstar or any other insights.

The general consensus (and it's only general, different viewpoints and personal situations exist) on this board seems to be that points are usually best used for premium cabin awards, or upgrades from economy to same. That's certainly how I view it, though there are always exceptions.

In the cases listed above (and I'm assuming they're in Y) I'd go Qantas for the few extra points cost, and put up with the inconvenience of the SYD transfer (minor in the scheme of things) in order to get a full-service QF experience over the JQ economy LCC experience.

You could also consider an anyseat award (ASA) which will tend to cost a few more points (or a lot more, dependent on availablility and when you book), but will earn SCs and FF points. Reasonably priced ASAs are not always available. You could also pay $$$ and save up the points for a something 'bigger'. Ultimately your choice dependent on your outlook and situation.

Enjoy your trip, whatever you decide. :)

Using QFF points on JQ is not a good idea. It's yet *another* place where QF distances themselves from JQ "when it's convenient".

On a flight MEL-BKK, you are likely to spend more on JQ "Extras" than you lose by throwing in an additional 6000 points and a few extra $ in charges to fly Qantas.

Now if paying cash, the difference is an entirely different matter. With that difference, perhaps JQ is better - but keep in mind the luggage costs, food costs, no FF points (unless you pay a fare similar to QF anyway) will add quite a few $ extra.
