Using QF frequent flyer points to purchase American Airlines flights- does it include baggage?

I have booked a flight within the US through the Qantas site, and paying for the flights with my points.

On the QF site, it claims that the QF flights include checked baggage/luggage. However, on the manage my bookings it shows 0 pieces of checked luggage. As the flights are not QF, but with an affiliated airline then do we need to pay at checkin?

Also, we need to change planes to get to the destination (ie LAX to Indianapolis to Boston) do you think they will check the baggage through to the final destination?

At AA checkin, I have been asked ‘What is your final destination, today” (i.e., as confirmation).

If flying LAX-IND-BOS on the same day, then yes, baggage is checked through to BOS and this will be confirmed at checkin.

Regarding baggage allowance, what’s on the AA booking (if anything)? The AA PNR can be obtained by phoning QF.
 
If it was a “Classic Reward” then it will include baggage. If you booked “Pay with Points” a commercial fare converted into points …. I have no idea.

No - frustratingly, the Qantas indicates checked baggage is included, but AA (and AS) doesn't actually include any.

I intend to get up to Silver status which gets one checked bag through being Oneworld ruby.

Also, if you don't want to call QF, you can get your AA PNR by going to Malaysia Airlines' site, going to Manage My Booking and plugging in the QF PNR, then looking for "listRecordLocator" in the page source.

Errr... no it doesn't.
 
In my (before Covid) experience, luggage will only be included if the flight is on the same ticket as Qantas legs. If it’s a flight on its own ticket, it won’t include baggage.
 
IMHO the AA website/booking reference is the key source here - obtain the AA PNR as outlined above, and see what it says. If it says no, then it doesn't include any.

I had the same argument with Qantas after booking Westjet reward flights through QFF. It repeatedly indicated baggage was included in the booking process, but once you booked QF Manage My Booking indicated none included, and Westjet website confirmed this. I took screenshots during the process because I had my doubts, and was successful in having the booking cancelled and refunded due to the incorrect information given during the booking process.
 
Thanks, all. Btw- i rang AA Australia and was given the AA booking number, and so could select seats etc. . Will still need to pay for bags.

I have also bought a flight with WestJet using QF points. Is there anyway to contact westjet in Australia so that I can get the westjet flight number, and so book seats?
 
I have a domestic First (business) trip with AA purchased as a Qantas classic reward. I purchased the tickets (Platinum) for myself and wife (Gold) are we entitled to any free checked baggage?

Domestic First has 2 free bags regardless. You will get 3 free bags due to being Emerald, and your wife will get 2.
 
The luggage policy on most US carriers is silly - the first (and so far only) time I went to the US back in 2019, you pay for luggage at the check-in kiosk / counter - there was no option to do so when purchasing your ticket initially or in the manage booking portal.

Our system is much better where you can pay for it, or it's included at the point of purchase.

That's definitely not the case today. Five years is a long time in technology, there have been plenty of upgrades since then for all the major carriers.

Well I mean 2019 wasn't exactly the dark ages either, surely US carriers could have implemented a "pre-pay" luggage option within the manage booking portal or even at the initial booking.

As I was accustomed to our way of doing luggage, I was a bit confused where I could see my luggage allowance prior to completing my booking. I then Googled it and found out that luggage payment / allocations are only done at check-in and that there was no option to do it prior to.

I was flying with United and Alaska airlines at the time (revenue fares though).

I think off the top of my head, only Southwest Airlines had the same luggage processing as us (ie. it's either included or you can pay for it at the time of booking).
 
I've flown AA and UA for decades, and certainly well before five years ago one could pay for bags during the booking process if they were required - having status or purchasing a premium fare meant I never had to, but very clearly part of the booking process imo.

Of course, the LCC's (F9, NK etc) even encourage pax to do that as part of the booking process (a la Jetstar).
