I am a lowly bronze doing minimal domestic travel & at best a yearly os trip ( main earning from credit card spend). Better half is doing reasonable amount of domestic flights on one class flights that earn the min 1000 points per flight and usually only 10 status credits each way. Currently she has 2 upgrade credits available with one due to expire on 31/10/05. We are travelling os in Sept 05 on an already paid flight in Q class & I calculate better half will reach gold status by the time we reach Singapore on the way home and also have 3 upgrade credits by that time (early Oct). No domestic flights will be taken in Oct 05 on flights with more than 1 class so want to use Upgrage Credits from Singapore if possible for better half to travel in business class back to Sydney if possible. Also is it reasonable or stupid for me to use points for business class upgrade on Singapore to Sydney sector & expect us to both end up in business class. Flight is QF 6 on a Mon.

Looking at U availability in September 2005 on a Monday for QF6 you don't look to have much luck.

Monday 5th - U0
Monday 12th - U1
Monday 19th - U0
Monday 26th - U0

So unless you're both travelling on the 12th only one will have an upgrade and the only option will be to waitlist and hope for availability closer to travel.

Keep in mind that upgrade credits cease to be earned as of May 25 and are instead replaced by 5000 point bonuses.

Additionally, from May 25 Q Class can no longer be upgraded using points or credits.

See
http://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/program/changes/newProgramFeatures?lk=promoff

for more details about this.

If you get in before the changes occur on May 25 then you plan *may* work (if the upgrade availabily exists). However once that date passes, upgrading will no longer be possible on that fare code.

I have 1 upgrade credit due to expire around May2006.

Have no idea what to do with it as my next upgrade credit will be due around July-August and this will be in the form of 5000 points due to the new rule changes.

Does anybody want it? Are they transferable? Or can someone give me some they don't need for an upgrade Brisbane-Singapore in June?

You can use your lonely upgrade credit to upgrade a family member on an eligible fare. Qantas have defined what constitutes a family member, but it is a pretty broad scope.

You cannot just give them your UC, nor can they add yours to their own to pool enough to upgrade a longer flight. It only works for you upgrading the family member's already purchased ticket.

Pertinent Question at this time as the Flying Rat is removing U/G credits.

How would I upgrade a partner to get rid of expiring UG's but I don't want her to know about it?

Can get her flight number but don't know her booking code.

Name and Flight Number is probably enough to do the upgrade. Just call QF on 131211 and tell them what you want to do.

One problem with the flyee not knowing they are traveling in business class is that they will line up to check-in at the economy line, which may be very long. So they may miss out on one of the benefits of flying in business class.

When I upgarded Mrs NM on a trip to Perth, she was not aware of the upgrade and was expecting to be in WHY along with 3 week old Mini-NM#4. I was with her at check-in and just walked stright up to the business class counter. She thought I was using my Platinum status to get her checked in there, which of course can't be done since I was not flying. She was well pleased with the 1E seat allocation and it was a good exchane of a few thousand FF points for a few thousand brownie points  .

I then told her to ensure she used the business class check-in counter for her return flight from Perth, so by that she determined her upgrade was in both directions.

Actually, if you are using your own UC's then it's as NM says. Of course, it will show up in her booking as soon as processed, so how are you going to not get her to view her booking?? But then again, maybe thta's part of your plan, to make sure she notices it (Darling, how ever did I get upgraded to Business??).

If you want to use her UC's for her upgrade; then you'll need to know name, date, flight number, FF number and their PIN. You may have troubles because of the Privacy Act (as you are not the person); but I've been able to do it in the past.
