VA > Delta baggage thru check at SYD?

I appreciate its not something many people have done recently but wondering (on behalf of someone else) what the current situation is re baggage thru check (single ticket) at SYD for DOM > INT.

I know when everything turned bad last year, people were moving their own bags between terminals...but the minimum connecting times were never updated to account for this.

Is it still the case? I heard a very recent story (last month) of travelers on VA>DL who had to recheck their bags at SYD.

The VA website says baggage will be thru-checked....but in the same section it also talks about taking the airside bus from Gate 46....so....!

I can't imagine things have improved in the last month. I know all last year there was no through check and I'd plan for this to still be the case.

The gate 46 bus is not running nor is the free T-Bus operated by Sydney Airport. The Virgin website hasn't been updated.

The only ways to travel between the terminals is by public transport either Bus (Route 400 or 420 for ~$3) or Train (~$7) it's possible to use a contactless credit card on both of these services without buying a paper ticket. Alternativley a taxi/uber (which could be $20-40).

Thanks for that. The passenger called DL (the ticketing carrier) and was told the bags would be checked through...but I don't believe it!

VA would be the people to ask given they're the ones that will do the initial check-in.

We received notification at work (flight centre) ages ago that advised VA weren’t through checking bags on domestic flights on to DL, its a recollect in SYD, may have missed the announcement though if that’s changed

Thanks for that info. I don't believe anything has changed.

A bit off topic but I don't think Qantas is even through checking baggage to international flights (or at least they weren't for early day NZ flights and I think they don't during lockdowns).

The Virgin Australia international transfer area (where you recheck bags for onward domestic flights) has been turned into the queueing area for hotel quarantine busses whilst the Qantas area has been turned into a NSW health vaccination center.
