Any speculation as to who VA will keep on board for international partners and when they'll reopen bookings?

  • My guess is DL/SQ/AC/NH are probably firm core new partners. I would suspect the majority of future redemptions will be with these four airlines.
  • MI is going into SQ anyway.
  • HA has always been there, and probably will continue on.
  • EY unless VA negotiate an exclusivity deal with SQ for Europe? They became hugely unattractive to me anyway with their reward carrier charges though for premium awards.
  • HNA group airlines (Hainan, Capital, Hong Kong, Tanjin) would all be gone as no longer a shareholder partner and HKG is not going to be what it once was.
  • AZ is gone anyway.
  • SA maybe if they fly to Perth as they provide oncarriage east and aren't allowed to partner with QF but depends if SAA can get their act together.

Could post the ol' Value Alliance banner, guest starring Wizzair and Ryanair connecting off Scoot in Athens ;)

But seriously, the 'Big 3' possibly going forward is DL/SQ/AC, maybe turning into the 'Big 4' with NH eventually. I suspect EY will still be there, but whether they'll play a 'big' or 'minor' role is another question.

Was there ever a partnership with MK?

I wonder if there will be a push or incentive from Star Alliance or SkyTeam to bring VA onboard to plug the missing Australia domestic link.

VA iirc only had a interline agreement with MK. MK interlined with both Australian carriers.

Star Alliance and SkyTeam were proactive early on, but later events such as the NZ breakup, Star Alliance majors such as UA not being pleased with VA partnering with DL, and so forth had led both major Alliances to step back from VA, to an extent where Star Alliance at the time declared they were 'no longer' interested in VA post NZ breakup.

As for Alliances it'll be ultimately up to Bain. Bain are of course conservative on CapEx outside VA's core mainline domestic flying and VFF.

Bain would've signed up to a 'full service' Alliance by now if they thought the CapEx required to join one (There's the joining fees, computer upgrades, etc) would had a return on investment.

If they can get past the vetos *A still makes the best sense and Australians are familiar with it. Despite the industry moving away from alliances they are better for customer perception particularly at the elite tiers where the big bucks are. Given all of the money they spent on other things they should have just bitten the bullet.

At least a clean ownership structure allows this to be reassessed.

I’ve heard a rumour that SQ decided to exit a number of months ago and long ago signed with QF for domestic Australia codeshare. They are just waiting until the end of the end of existing agreement and disclosure clauses until SQ can make the announcement.
Again a rumour.

I doubt the ACCC would allow a QF/SQ deal similar to the QF/EK one. If this is true it'd mean the deal would be similar to the QF/NZ one which is purley codeshare across the domestic network. This would be a blow for SQ and VA frequent flyers with very little gained by QF given they already codeshare with SQ on inter asia routes.

Does anyone know when this is?

Announcement next month I believe.

SQ and QF don't codeshare as of current. They do interline on the Australian domestic network (from SQ) and the Australia-SiN-India (from QF) routes as of this time iirc.

Ah yes my mistake. Interesting times ahead!

If that QF/SQ codeshare rumour happens to be the case post-VA JV agreement expiry, it would be a considerable move away from spending CapEx on Australian connections through a stake in a QF competitor, similar to the QF/NZ agreement. It would also put the final nails into the 6 year long "Singapore will taek ovah VA !!11!!" vaporware articles.

With the codeshare rumour, All SQ and QF would need to do is put their code on each's others flights in Australia and the Indian connections, going beyond the current interline agreement.

I would guess the current SQ management would want to move away from the former management's 'ego' driven last 2 attempts at the Australian market through Tiger and Virgin. Not to mention SQ's Ansett attempt decades ego via Air New Zealand.

As a inactive insider posted on here, reportedly the QF/NZ agreement brought in more revenue than NZ's time with the NZ/VA JV agreement. The current SQ management I would guess probably have studied the QF/NZ agreement.

Yes we desperately need pauly7 back to feed us the insider goss!

Devastating news if true. So the only way to Europe will be Etihad with their outrageous fees, won't be a good look for VA. Does anyone know when the SQ/VA agreement expires?

Official finish date of the VA/SQ Alliance is on 15 October 2021.

If the rumour for the QF/SQ codeshare deal for domestic Australian connections (plus the SIN-India flights) to come into fruition, it would be likely announced in November.

Good point , only a thousand miles longer, though imagine transfer times will be long.
Yeah not ideal.

EY are not a great option for VA though. This is a problem for them that they’ll need to fix somehow but I can’t see how going to Europe most airlines are part of alliances which make it hard to sign them up as a partner in direct competition with QF

Why? They aren’t A grade but they aren’t horrific…. As long as they don’t go bankrupt or downsize anymore!
