Few Syd to Perth on the above flight on XFB using one of my complimentry upgrades.

Boarding commenced around 35 mins prior to take off. I like to beat the rush and I was second down the aerobridge.

When the person in front of me and myself arrived at the aircraft there were no cabin crew to greet us, so we had to help ourselves to our seats in J. Suddenly two cabin crew members jumped up from row 1 looking very surprised that we had boarded. Another crew member was almost running past me and said "**** we haven't finished our security checks yet". By now there would have been another dozen or so people wandering around Y looking for their seats. Another crew member immediately stopped anyone else boarding until they sorted themselves out.

About 10 minutes later pre take off drinks were offered. At this point I would have expected a formal greeting or least an apology for the boarding shumozzle, but no nothing.

Shortly after dinner menu's were handed out with only a "here is the menu's and wine list for today's flight" and still no apology or even being addressed as Mr Mogul.

Dinner and wine choices taken soon after take off with only the bare minimum interaction from the crew.

Excuses were made for the IFE not working but it only broke down earlier that day!!!!!! No alternative was offered to pax in J, luckily it had WIFI.

Asked for some butter to have with the bread roll and it was dropped onto my tray still in it's plastic container, this is J isn't it.

Soon after maincourse my wine glass disappeared, no offer of a clean one or another drink. Asked for a coffee which eventually turned up luke warm at best.

Goodbye from crew on leaving the aircraft was very lacluster to say the least.

Overall it was the worst onboard experience I have had with VA. The only positive was my bag was 4th out.

I can't help but laugh regarding the crew reaction upon boarding, although the onboard treatment is definitely not up to standard.

Hope next trip is nicer for you!

35 mins seems a bit early to start boarding for a domestic flight, they probably anticipated another 10 mins before it was work, lights, camera action for the longer haul domestic flight. You startled the poor dears no wonder things didn't work out for the rest of the flight. We all like a moment to compose ourselves, get our headspace right and things then click into place. Besides they were doing a very important job keeping those seats warm at the very front!

There is nothing outrageous here, just a poor performance for J. In my limited VA J experience it is par for the course - J class is not in VA's DNA.

Fly SQ J then. They always call by name, as do QFd J after they gave checked flight manifest.
I don't expect a lot from/of VA really.
They are not "top grade" ala QFd either.

Is XFB (and XFA) for that matter still have the old piece-of-s&^@ seats in Business inherited from Emirates or have Virgin upgraded( or plan upgrade them) to the same standard as the rest of the fleet? For me this is the biggest let down. It costs the same $$$ and points for their good J seat, as for the coughpy seat. Emirates do the same. I recently flew HKG-DXB-DXB on points, and the flight back was subbed from a 777-300 to an A340. The seats in J were pretty much the same reclining seats as XFA and XFB have. They also should have different pricing for the different products. I would have been pissed if I paid for the tickets, was expecting a 777, and ended up with an old-school A340.

XFA has left the fleet AFAIK, with plans for XFB to do the same. If the IFE on board wasn't so ancient, I am not so sure people would have issues with XFA/B as they are a better product Business wise compared to the latest domestic A330 product on the Red Roo.

Are you sure about XFA ? I just looked on flightaware, and it shows it did PER-MEL on Thursday. VH-XFA
I haven't flown QF J so I cannot compare, but if you're paying the same for XFA/XFB as you would for XFC+, you would be dissapointed if you ended up on the former.

For what its worth, I've always been greeted by name throughout all my J flights, even in some economy trips. The food has always been fantastic, touch wood...

I read recently somewhere one of the ex-EK birds left the fleet.

I guess pricing isn't solely based on product, I am sure this shows up.

I had a similar expirence on XFB about 3 weeks ago in J flying PER-SYD.

Submitted feedback via the velocity site to which I've not had a reply.

I won't be in a hurry to fly VA J again while ending up on this bird is still a possibility.

Never had a bad experience in J yet and have always been addressed by name and never had to make requests as the service has been attentitive, timely and efficient.

Virgin frequently commence A330 flights 45 minutes prior in my experience.

All my other C To C flights in J have been very good, they clearly dropped the ball big time this time.

Yesterday's return flight was how it should have been on the way over. J from what I could see had only 1 empty due to earlier delays with VA556.

Interesting listening to a couple of Qantas Platinums behind me talking about how much better the VA offering was C to C.
