Just posted a similar thread in the QFF forum if anyone is interested: Classic Reward cancellation terms

This question is about cancellation of a single sector classic reward MEL-HKG (haven't booked it yet).

The fare rules say this:

CANCELLATIONS
BEFORE DEPARTURE
CHARGE AUD 35.00/USD 35.00 FOR CANCEL/REFUND.
NOTE - TEXT BELOW NOT VALIDATED FOR AUTOPRICING.
CHARGE AUD35/USD35/4500 POINTS FOR REFUND.
----
NO REFUND FOR CANCELLATION MADE LESS THAN 24
HOURS PRIOR TO FLIGHT SCHEDULED TIME.

Looks like you can pay $35 to cancel up to 24 hours before the flight and get your points back.
Are taxes paid refunded as well or just the points? If you used points for the taxes component, would they all be refunded?

I'm waitlisting a CX J award but need to fly on that day so will pick up a Y VA (or QF/CX) seat in the meantime.

Yes and yes. Although I thought international cancellations on VA was $60 and domestic $35.

If paying taxes with a credit card make sure to use one you intend to keep otherwise chasing the refund might be a pain.

Thanks for that and good point about the card. I copied that text straight from a dummy booking for a Y International award so I guess it's $35.

The Virgin Australia website also seems to suggest $60 for cancellation on an international reward fare. I suggest you save/print those rules when booking just in case!
