I came across a rumour that regular fraud may have been occurring. Along the lines of a partner airline's flight boarded and some with access to the passenger manifest using an online manage booking facility to change many of the frequent flyer numbers even before takeoff. Once credited, online transfers consolidate points and e gift cards are promptly redeemed .....

Oh but wouldn't there be a mismatch in the passenger name and the frequent flyer account name?

I wonder if it's related to FF# being replaced on Qatar Account - FlyerTalk Forums and Help! Points for QR flight not credited. Still being accused of lying.

At least one case there of someone's FF number being replaced with a fraudster's VA number

You'd think so, but the above cases seem to show that people are able to commit fraud with FF accounts despite this? Maybe they're making fresh VA accounts under the victim's name to collect the points, and then family transfer into the fraudster's account afterwards?

Bit like the mismatch BSB number to name which the BANKS don’t check

If it is related to the changed FF# discussions elsewhere, imho they got super greedy. They could have pulled this off for travelers with no FF# in their booking for years and probably never get caught

The juicy targets are those flying J and F though (in terms of points earn), and I'd imagine those people usually have FF#

They are such small numbers that I'd think it would be a volume thing, get as many pax changed as possible. On average in the US J accounts for 13.6% of travel - even if it's double the points of Y, you'd be able to net 4 times as much from the Y cabin.

That said, if they're doing it by hand and a J pax gives them twice the reward, I see that angle too.

End of the day it seems like they turned it into a race to the bottom - and won.

This is a VERY long outage. Has anyone heard any updates?

Not expecting anything anytime soon. If you read the various threads around points going missing it seems there's some significant issues around people exploiting transfers to steal points, not just with VFF but across multiple airlines.
