Why can't I use my Velocity membership to pre-pay for Live2Air, which is then redeemed by swiping my Velocity card instead of my credit card? If you could do this, would you use it?

My flight up to MKY this morning was delayed by ~30 mins, and to DJ's immense credit, they gave all pax complementary Live2Air as a result. This was a great surprise and fantastic to see, but it also caused me to ponder the above thought during my sleep-deprived zombie trance at the times that I wasn't watching Lady Gaga dance around in a decidedly lacking outfit on Channel [V].

I firmly believe that if DJ offered Velocity members the option to pre-purchase Live2Air at the time of booking their fare, they'd see a not insignificant number of people taking it up. It'd rely on the fact that you do not then need to lure the customer to make a second purchase when they are on the flight itself, though that of course would remain an option. I'm no sales guru but it makes logical sense to me that offering the lure of impulse bolt-on upgrades to fares for a small extra cost would encourage people to take them up - after all, what's $5 or $10 (or less - see below) when they're looking at a $100 fare on the screen at the same time? This is, after all, the entire premise behind having confectionery at supermarket checkouts.

You could extend this - Velocity pax could log in to manage their booking and buy it at any time after booking their flight. This could be sold at a small discount ($4.50/$9.00 vs $5/$10 - don't underestimate the power of even insignificant savings!) to the passenger as it's pre-paid then and there, encouraging a purchase early for saving in exchange for parting with money prior to the use of the service. This could be extended again by way of offering bulk-buy 'credits' for a discount so that frequent pax could stock up and use them as they go.

The infrastructure is obviously the hurdle here, but I think the benefits for all involved are worthwhile:

- Pax get cheaper IFE by pre-purchasing
- FF's get even cheaper IFE by buying in bulk
- DJ get a larger IFE uptake by offering it at the time the pax is already spending money and thus increasing the chance of purchasing
- DJ get the spend earlier than at the time of service, allowing for investment of the money

Opinions? Thoughts on how to improve the idea? Cries of "Nam Taf you're stupid shut up and go away!"? Let me hear them!

Moot point really as Live2Air in it's current form is being removed due to poor take up. Good ideas though!

Here's hoping they look at the new QF domestic AVOD and roll something similar out (free of charge!)

You can already get 50% off L2A if you pay using a Virgin creditcard:

Virgin credit card offer provides 50% discount off the normal price of Live2air. Price charged to cardholder will be AUD $2.45 for domestic flights of less than 2 hours; AUD$4.45 for flights greater than 2hrs and Pay per view movies will be AUD $4.45. Live2air may not be available on all flights. Payment with Virgin Flyer or No Annual Fee Credit Card required. Discount will appear on your credit card statement. This offer may be withdrawn at any time.

I think it is a great idea - shame it is happening when the overhaul will see LTA disappear.

Even better, offer free LTA to Gold Members (as they do to PE pax). I know that in one visit to the lounge, I drink enough Squealing Pig, Coronas and Lattes that DJ are out more than $5 :) Perhaps, with free IFE it would just be another way to show FF that they care...

2 days ago we were delayed by ATC in Sydney too and; as always; the crew provided free IFE. I like that DJ does that - but have often wondered the same issue - what happens to those people who swiped with their cards already? Do they get reimbursed or do they just accept it. Meh?

I can't wait til Live2Air is gone forever.

It was a coughpy 2nd hand product from day one with limited channels and small screens.

A very poor copy of the USA Live2Air systems on various airline.

I am still curious if DJ is going to refit all their 737's with IFE....

I'm 90% sure that once they put it into free mode all records of payments are wiped. We had a flight where the system was playing up and i had already paid. The put it onto free as a mechanism of removing the costs i and other had been charged.

I for one will miss LTA. I think live entertainment, news, sports online is an excellent service. I used to make a point of scheduling longer flights around times when matches i wanted to watch were on - great way to pass the time. More recently so many aircraft don't have it that any attempt to time flights that way is bound to end in frustration.

Just a product they thought they could gouge some more money out of passengers with. So good they are getting rid of it. :D

Can anyone shed any light on how much LTA cost in the first place and what sort of return DJ got on their investment? I have indeed heard previously that it was a second-hand system (from another airline?) and opinions vary on whether it is worth watching (and paying for), but do you think DJ actually made any money on it?

Personally I think LTA isn't worth it because I'm really not that keen on all of the American content and sport channels, although Sky News is great to watch before the system prompts you to swipe your credit card. A pity the screens are so small.

I'm a fan of L2A flying mainly on domestic flights between PER-SYD return or PER-SYD-OOL return. To me L2A is a reasonable consideration that makes me pick VB or Qantas.

Its actually one of the things I like most about VB compared to Qantas - I hate having to crane my head to see one of the tiny overhead screens rows away with cough tracking like watching a worn out VHS tape or watching a rubbish feel good movies with actors I can't stand which really don't interest me.

I also hate having to lean into the aisle slightly to see the movies or flight tracker screen projected on the bulkheads on Qantas 767's only to be hit in the back of the head by the dinner cart or continually bumped into by aisle walkers with restless legs.

Q radio is just as pathetic - you can listen through the same channel 3x on a PER-SYD flight since most of the shows are only between 40mins to 1hr in my rough estimations. Total snooze fest.

L2A gives me the choice to watch (or not watch) a recent movie or news, business, sports or music.

No L2A would make me very unhappy and probably rethink my domestic carrier. :(

Rather go back to CRT screens on ageing QF 767s? One can only hope that DJ will introduce 9" seat back AVOD a la Virgin America with a good variety of entertainment, consistent across the fleet. I think I recall JB mentioning that the majority of the fleet will be retrofitted by mid next year, which is pretty optimistic but will be terrific if it eventuates. I guess the fact lots of older aircraft are being returned to their lessors and new 737 NGs with the sky interior are coming online will help....

I only hope they reprogram the navigation map on channel 13. When flying the OOL to SYD route and checking the position, this map shows the aircraft out to sea when it obviously is not.

I'm glad the 2 people up the pointy end are not using this device.

Maybe you have been flying in the last 2 weeks where Air Traffic Control staff shortages have meant that was the way a few of the planes have gone to Sydney from the North!

Last night on SYD-OOL I was in Melbourne for the start of the flight!

I really enjot L2A, being able to watch the news and sport live was a huge bonus. This is one thing I think QF could take a leaf of Virgin's book. I would pay for this on QF.

I hate getting on a QF flight in LHR or LAX, and try to use the supposed latest new option on QF's which I have never got to work.

I am a big fan of DJ Live2Air, most of my flights are ADL to MEL and I do not purchase it every time however as someone mentioned above, live sports is an amazing way to pass the time. If only V Australia had Live2Air on the 777 fleet, would love watching live telly on a long haul flight for news/sport etc would be great.

A few years back, IIRC a aircraft in US had a faulty nose gear, and the captain kept it quiet, until a pax noticed their flight was live on the news. That would make for a awkward question for the team.... Er, Cabin Crew.
