I am booking flights Melbourne to Damascus and Cairo to Melbourne for my family of four over the December/January period. We will likely fly with Emirates. I am wondering which will give the best flight miles - open a Skywards account and use them with Emirates or use our velocity membership numbers.
Do the emirates miles add to velocity status credits??
I am also reviewing my credit cards - currently amex for business and cba gold mastercard for personal.
The cba gold is rubbish for FF miles and may change to a better one when I have had a chance to review what is available.

Anytime out there? I can only hear the crickets and my own voice. Lol. All jokes aside I hope to hear from some of the experts here soon.

I myself don't have a grasp of this whole world-wide intermail thing, but my 3 year old daughter says there is a chance you can find out this info from the velocity and the skywards websites. But remember, although she is unbelievably cute, I suspect she is also stupid. Time will tell.

Personally, when I fly on Emirates I credit back to velocity, but usually I only fly between AUS & NZ, not long haul - there isn't much point crediting the miles to Emirates as I rarely fly with them. If you fly with Virgin Blue regularly, then it's probably better to credit back there. If you fly with Emirates more often, it might be an idea to start building your status credits/miles. So as you can see, both have their benefits. What works for some, might not work for everyone.

Ps. You don't get status credits when crediting to the other FF scheme.

Agree 100% here. I credit Emirates to Emirates but just did my third return on them SIN-MEL in 6 mths add to that a shorter Emirates flight, it works for me. However, if you are not flying them often, then I'd suggest you all credit to Velocity (check that booking class earns points). The advantage of that is with family transfers, you can combine points from individual accounts to form a larger number that may be more useful than the four of you each having your own balance in Emirates. Also, Emirates have family membership but this is NOT recommended as other people on the membership (apart from primary member) only earn at 20% ...

Not sure how many points u will earn for the flight, but prob not enough to get anywhere with EK. unless you're planning some other lfights with them i'd say send the points to velocity.

As for ya credit card, the best avail is either the Card Services Gold card - either direct earn to QF or as reward points to use with Krisflyer and Velocity, or the Citibusiness Gold card which lets you credit to QF even though it's not a direct earn card.
