We'd booked SYD-CNS return for September 2021 in March 2021. The points were Krisflyer points that had been converted from Velocity points last year in March.
The flights were on an Air New Zealand code share on Qantas metal. I thought it would be a nightmare to deal with if we weren't able to fly due to a lockdown, but at the time of booking in March this year thought we were on our way out of COVID.
When the Sydney lockdown started in June I was still hopeful the lockdown would be over and state borders reopened by the end of September. Well, that won't be happening and when I happened to check the Qantas app last Friday I saw our flights had been cancelled by Qantas, but I hadn't received an email or any other notification of the cancellation. The Krisflyer app said one or more of the flights had changed and someone would contact me to rebook.
On Monday still not having received any notifications of the cancellation I called the Krisflyer line and after advising them that my flights had been cancelled by Qantas and that I had no idea when we'd be able to fly I was told the points and taxes would be refunded. I was told the taxes could take up to six weeks to be processed back onto my credit card.
Well, the points were back on the account as soon as the call was over and the tax refund hit the credit card yesterday, so less than 48 hours. I'm very relieved that it was such a smooth refund process. The Novotel Cairns had been booked through booking.com and was a pay on arrival with free cancellation up to 6pm on the day of arrival so that was no problem to cancel either.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to use my stash of just under 500k of Krisflyer points before they expire in March 2023.
