(very) short connection time in PHX

Hi all

I have a multiple rewards flight bookings under one PNR next year, booked as part of a OWA itinerary via Qantas.

One particular segment in the middle of the itinerary is an AA flight between EWR and LAS via PHX. I understand the MCT is 25 minutes in PHX, and this is exactly how much time we have.

1. Would you be calling up the call centre to find another flight to replace this? The only alternative in the same cabin is with a 40 minute layover in ORD. Going down to Y opens up some options with a 1-hour layover.

2. Were we to stay with this flight and misconnect, would AA rebook us or would they ask me to get in contact with Qantas? We arrive in Phoenix around 8:00 p.m. so I would not expect to be able to get an onward flight the same day.

3. Would misconnecting put future segments in the itinerary at risk of cancellation?

If you miss your connection AA will protect you, and the rest of the ticket should remain in tact.

It is always a good idea however, once you complete the day’s travel after a missed connection or rerouting, to ring and confirm the rest of the ticket is ok. Gate agents can work miracles to reaccommodate people on alternative flights, but on very rare occasions that can register as a ‘no show’ for your original flight, affecting the rest of the ticket.

While that is extremely rare, always a good idea to check.

If your inbound is obviously looking like it’s going to miss the connection even before you depart, gate agents might reroute you via another city anyway, by passing PHX in its entirely.

Even if you change flights now, there’s no guarantee the new flights won’t be delayed!

Finally, there’s quite a bit of padding on US domestic flight times. It might show as 25 mins connecting time, but on the day you might have double that.

If you have to overnight your travel insurance should cover any expenses. The airline will cover it if it is due to an event in their control.

I was really not keen on going through Qantas call centre again so leaving it as is has that other benefit. Thanks heaps, super helpful as usual
