I'll be there in January only for a day, does anyone have any recommendations on what to see (and do)?
Thinking of staying somewhere overlooking the Danube river?
Is there a reasonably good train/PT network?

Good transport including underground. One day makes it a bit tough, but pick one of the palaces (Schonbrunn, Belvedere or Hofburg - the last one is more central) and perhaps st. Stephens Cathedral in the centre of the old city.

For convenient access to/from VIE, there is a Hilton which sits on top of the main train station that connects VIE.

We stayed at the Ritz Carlton Vienna earlier this year and was highly impressed from start to finish. Even though it was a bit chilly during March we were able to hire those bicycles and ride everywhere we needed to explore in the main city.

I've just visited for the first time; TR & pics here. Its completely overwhelming. As codash1099 suggests, pick one palace and do it well. The Kunsthistorisches Museum and its twin, the Naturhistorisches Museum would be my choice. Superb buildings and treasures / art within them. If you are like me and can only take half a day of overwhelming art at once, you could then wander around the Hofburg buildings and the Stephansdom to complete the day.

Belvedere is a bit of a walk from any Metro station and while the buildings / grounds are superb, the art inside is more modern and not what I visited Vienna for.

The Danube itself is a bit off the main / old city; I wouldn't worry about it being the focus of your stay.

The metro is good and very easy to use. Choose English at any of the ticket machines and you are off in minutes.
