Hi, I've got 2 separate bookings for a Virgin Atlantic flight arriving in to international terminal from HKG at 0730 and then a Virgin Australia flight departing the same terminal for Auckland at 0940. Apparently I must clear customs and then check in 90 mins before the latter flight, so I only have a window of 40 mins assuming the former flight arrives on time. I'm flying premuim economy HKG to SYD so should get my bags quite promptly on arrival (in my experience they offload them first and they are waiting for you).

Am I bonkers? Are Virgin Australia really tight on closing check in 90 mins before a 3hr flight? Some reassurance/tips would be good, but if this is an ill-conceived plan and I really should amend the latter flight at significant additional cost then I really would rather know now than later! Thank you frequent flyers!

When you check in at HKG, see if you can get the bags through checked by showing the second itin, if you can than a simple transfer is all that is required.

Thanks markis10, could I ask whether this is something you've managed to do before, even when the tickets are on separate reservations? I've jut spoken to Virgin Australia and they insist that they can only check bags through when the tickets for the two legs of the journey were purchased at the same time, on the same reservation (which they weren't). However I'm sure I've succeeded in doing this with other airlines previously! (Obviously I've also asked whether they can somehow be put on the same reservation and the answer is no!)

Virgin Australia do have that limitation, Virgin Atlantic may not, the best you can do is ask at checkin, two different airlines and systems.
