Having just flown J SYD-MEL return I do feel the J product with Qantas is slightly inferior to VA.

Key reasons:
No pre departure beverage
No proactive offer of drink refills (has to ask when they asked if I wanted tea/coffee)
On the evening QF flight they didn't offer any bottled water (But offered it to numerous Y passengers who were "running late to board") which personally I thought was a nice touch!
Dinner options was a chicken pie, cheese plate or soup (VA usually only has 2 options but both seem more substantial)
