I am flying LAX-BNE in September on a rewards ticket. The first and last time I flew VA from BNE-LAX return, I was complimentarily upgraded to PE from a very cheap Y ticket due to my Gold status (that was as high as status went back then). I was wondering if anyone has any experience of getting complimentary upgrades on VA with a rewards ticket recently.
My previous upgrades were instigated by VA and not me. It was really nice on the second leg for the FA to crouch down beside me after I was seated and invite me up to PE, then block off the whole middle row for my workmate to stretch out (they couldn't offer him an upgrade). I know VA has a Platinum status now and maybe Gold just doesn't cut it anymore. Any thoughts or experience?
Finally, I've seen a lot of post regarding getting the wife and two young kids successfully into an Australian domestic/international QC when only the husband is a member. I haven't seen anything about Virgin's and there partner clubs. From memory, the Alaskan Airlines lounge is open to VA Gold/Plat members. Any thoughts on successfully getting wife and kids in there or are they strict on the rules like BA?
