I’d probably say the pricing aligns to what the product is worth, you could say these sale prices are still a little steep competed to what the product is worth, which is just a glorified Spirit up front seat experience.
Fair point actually. BA’s club europe is under AUD500 to Amsterdam and under AUD600 to Paris. Given a large chunk of that is taxes and fees, it does make VA’s fares seem more realistic for the product. Bearing in mind BA serves champagne against sparkling, and has top notch catering.

Doesn’t say much for the QF 737 J product which is similar and can be worse IMO but twice the cost

Ultimately they charge what people are prepared to pay, and that's what decides what it is worth.
Qantas knows how sticky their customers are, so are likely to just accept it and pay as they aren't as price sensitive (loyal to the brand).
It's all a preconceived value.

Goodness! What does that make Qantas' 737 Domestic Business 'service' comparable to; which in my honest opinion is generally inferior to Virgin Australia's?

RyanAir?

They will charge what they charge until those sticky customers as mentioned above walk away. I know many of those types who fly QF J no matter how cough the experience, they are simply rusted on loyalists. Wouldn’t step a foot on Virgin even it was free.

Qantas give large corporates entities get 20% or more discount off fares; I guess Virgin do as well ... but as you indicated ... sticky ...

Having just flown J SYD-MEL return I do feel the J product with Qantas is slightly inferior to VA.

Key reasons:
  • No pre departure beverage
  • No proactive offer of drink refills (has to ask when they asked if I wanted tea/coffee)
  • On the evening QF flight they didn't offer any bottled water (But offered it to numerous Y passengers who were "running late to board") which personally I thought was a nice touch!
  • Dinner options was a chicken pie, cheese plate or soup (VA usually only has 2 options but both seem more substantial)

But… enforced group boarding, consistently operating wifi and IFE, bread and butter, and Koko black chocolates or other desserts. Cf VA with irregular wifi/IFE, cheese and biscuits in [non-recyclable] plastic packaging. Plus with QF, better handling in IRROPS because of (a) a larger J cabin and (b) allow on-loading of pax after boarding has started

The irony of stating non recycled plastic but also flying in a metal tube ☠️

Look the pricing a week out, it will sky rocket.

Looking at Sydney > Perth, there's business class fares from $899 one-way. That's probably a much better deal. Based on that 8 flights for $7,192 will currently retain platinum with 840 SC's. (Use promo code MTL68 and it's $759.28 so that's $6,074.24 to retain platinum.)

It's not unusual for deep discounting this time of year in the airline business people don't tend to be thinking of a holiday or a business trip unless it's for Christmas.

Add on top, there's probably some FF'ers wanting to get the status credits prior to the change-over.

Probably find once the "sale" ends there will be a double SC's promotion.

NOTE: There's some indirect flights with the promo code at $681.96 MEL > PER earning 135 SC's.

November dates are showing $379 outside the sale period.
Looking to book for AFF Melbourne gathering

I am also waiting for Qantas to match on a few routes. Some crazy business fares at the moment on Qantas.com

Not for anything past September, which lines up with their sales dates. Need to book all my Business Class flights for the year before April 2 to maintain Gold under the old scheme; have one lot to book left but the flights aren't until October

VA has generally had an advance purchase requirement for their cheapest fares. If I was still flying VA weekly I’d be snapping up these $309 fares though… even lower than they were in least year’s sale IIRC.

PER is a tricky one… the meal is the same as MEL-SYD, but you’re paying $$$ more for the remaining hours of the flight… which could be spent without IFE or WIFI :( SCs yes, but seriously, what’s the point with VA?

I thought you also got a dessert and a more substantial meal with PER.

You would also get more drinks service.

Flew in J last week and the only difference between the CNS-BNE and BNE-PER sectors was a slice of cake (it was nice, but not worth hundreds of dollars). The meals were identical, at least I got to try both! Although, a bread roll was also served on the way to PER.
