DJ and Ian Thorpe just held a press conference at the Sydney Sofitel, announcing a sponsorship deal and Thorpe's comeback to swimming.

However, the highlight was in John Borghetti's opening speech, when he assured everyone Ian would win lots of gold...for Qantas.

Would love to see a video of that, I assume with such a big gaff, he’ll relive it on the news tonight :D

Oh no! He would be feeling terrible right now.

Still... it's been a LONG time since he was with Qantas. I mean - that kind of mistake is forgivable if he'd only been with DJ for a month or two. But seriously... it's time that he shouldn't be making those kinds of slip-ups anymore.

Oh I think he will relive that moment many times over. It was pure gold live TV.

Some years ago in CBR on a Saturday afternoon I watched while he and a minder entered the (closed) CL via the door behind the QP bar.

Just heard this on the radio, hilarious. He won't be allowed to forget that for a long time.

Ha, gold (pun very much intended).

Anyone got a link? Couldn't see it on YouTube or any of the new sites.

Cheers,
- Febs.

 Funny - and got plenty of news coverage too. That the downside to hijacking a press conference like that.

Virgin CEO gaff

Did anyone else see the Virgin CEO slip up and say "win medals for Qantas" during the Ian Thorpe press conference on the news tonight. That's moment I bet he would rather forget:lol:

Re: Virgin CEO gaff

I just saw the clip on Channel 10.

At least he realised right away what he said and then had a chuckle about it. ;)

Re: Virgin CEO gaff

Leave poor Mr. Borghetti alone :(

He just hasn't quite got the QF days out of his system yet

Re: Virgin CEO gaffe

Should the irony of the thread title be pointed out in that there is a spelling error in it (also a gaffe)?

Saw the footage last night too. The look of embarrassment that came over Borghetti was priceless - and I doubt very much he'll live down that mistake anytime soon.

LOL, while it certainly came across as a big ooops... IMO I think it will be a positive, not a negative for DJ.

  1. It got heaps of airtime (the old adage - better to be seen than not).
  2. It reaffirms the message that the top man at Qantas made the switch to Virgin: (and with subliminal follow through - that customers can have confidence in making a switch too).
 So not necessarily an own goal!
