Virgin Blue To Offer SMS Check In

Australian airline Virgin Blue is planning to incorporate SMS technology into its reservation and check-in system.

Under the plan, Virgin would use SMS to send a barcode containing reservation details to a customer's mobile phone which would be scanned at check-in. Customers will also be able to receive their itinerary via SMS and use a GPRS or 3G-enabled phone to make changes to their reservation.

Virgin Blue's head of information technology, Nick Brant, told reporters the SMS service, which was trailed last week, would go live shortly with the barcode service to follow shortly thereafter. Brant said the SMS technology was a first for the Virgin group and that the technology could be rolled out internationally.

Virgin Blue to offer SMS checkin

It is an article from 12 August 2003 but it did look promising. I know other ailines offer this.

I participated in the QF trial of sms check-in.

Very handy it was too - check-in in the back seat of the taxi on the way to the airport!

Not sure about DJ though - probably forgotten.

I participated in the QF one as well - once. The reader could not discern the 2D barcode on my T18s screen. :-|

I never had a problem like that, luckily. The only odd thing was at least twice being presented with a "thick" boarding pass, because the a/c was refuelling and I couldn't keep the "thin" one on for the walk to the door!
