Hi Folks,
I've posted similarly before but it turned out I was a bit premature. I believe that the full business class product is now in operation from PER to the east and has been since late September. So, as I've been monitoring DJ progress and having just transferred a heap of CBA points to Velocity I popped along to the DJ site to see whats what.
I'm sad to say I still don't really understand what the deal is. I see PER-MEL flights labelled "Premium" with a smaller brown button in the same column called "Business". Hovering over Premium gives you a listing of what that means and its sounds about right for PE. Hoevering over Business lists the business deal and it also sounds about right, but its not exactly the same wording and in this funny old flying game wording (relating to benefits) is _really_ important.... the price appears to be the same, about $1299 so presumably Business _is_ Premium and there really isn't any difference? ...... thus the question.
So, Velocity seems to be telling me that if I were to spend 19,800 points I can upgrade from a "Flexi" fare to a "Premium" fare ... this is presumably a business fare as well??? Goodness really knows. Theres no way I'm spending money or points on the old PE style "Premium" seating/experience that Virgin used to have.
A reasonably randomly chosen return flight in "Flexi" economy was about $928 return PER-MEL. Upgrades to "Premium" appear to be fixed points cost based upon miles (which is good) at 19,800. Looking at what Velocity is offering via awards type redemption, they are still valuing their points at about 0.7c each. I think obtainable value via upgrade might be signficantly more:
Cash price, PER-MEL, Premium/Business = $2598
Cash + points, PER-MEL, Flexi upgraded to Premium/Business = $928 + 19,800 points = 0.7c/point = $928 + $138.60 = $1066.60
Given that the 19,800 points is giving you an apparent $1670 of value it looks like one is able to derive 8.4c / point. (2598-928) / 19,800 = $0.084
If Premium really is DJ's Business class product one does have to wonder why they are calling it Premium and not Business .... the thought occurs that its actually still PE, though hopefully more consistent than the last try.
