Well ....

I cntacted the call centre earlier today to enquire about upgrading a forthcoming flight from Y to J with either points or cash.

Attempt 1: Got overseas agent who said I could do this with points but not cash. My attempts to (politely) convince her that this was not so were unsuccesful, so ended call, dialled again.

Attempt 2: Another overseas agent, this time she agreed this was possible but she was not aurthorised to do it. Transferring call ...

Attempt 3: Call transferred to another O/S agent ... yes, this possible but she could not help because I am platinum and she is not authorised to deal with platinum flyers. Transferring you now ...

Attempt 4: An Aussie accent! My hopes soar! Yes, I can do this, but she is working from home and cannot process payments. Transferring you now ...

Attempt 5: Another Aussie accent. "Yes, I can do this." And she did. Oh joy!

I didn't even know you could upgrade with cash without bidding.
In this case the OP wants to upgrade their class if service but is using the economy fare towards a business class fare. It’s not upgrade per se but buying a new fare in the higher cabin.

I guess it's a matter of semantics but how's this ....

I was paying the fare difference to upgrade my booking from Y to J. 😉

Yes of course. In general terms that’s how we’d describe what you want to do. But for some o/s call centres the word ‘upgrade’ probably triggers reference to the ‘how to upgrade’ page, and FAQ’s on that :(

Life was SO much easier when BNE did SG & WP calls and offshore did the rest. Still, I surmise it's still cheaper to stuff it up three times offshore than get it right the first time in Aus. 😑😑😑
