Love the programme and a genuine Platinum flyer (not a Qantas status defector)
I wonder why have the premium lane in melb when its never policed and anyone walks though it?

Because MOST of the riff raft would not dare use it which makes it a winner by default.

It's amazing how people do respect unmanned queues at times ... I think the Brisbane (and Melbourne) ones have been pretty good when I've been through them.

I always get a kick out of the Premium Checkin at OOL. All the platinums police it, when you walk down it, people give you a little glance and if you don't look like you belong (Easy to pick, because you'll be holding a surfboard or wearing board shorts.) somebody will kindly point you to the right place. If you sit back and watch it's quite funny to see the whole thing happening!

I've noticed the Premium line in Brisbane is a little hidden, so most don't end up in it. However, Melbourne one, in my experience is pretty average and isn't policed at all.

I recently got a few of those "We want your feedback about your recent flight" emails from Virgin, I noted in there the woes about Priority Security lanes. Personally I'd like to see a staff member policing it, but if that's not feasible, training security staff to police it a little.

I'm a regular user of premium lines, check-ins etc, never wear suits, and find it all a bit amusing really.

Funny also about your "real" Platinum. Anyone who's been comped gets the same benefits, which seem to be just as real....

I have no problem if the queue is empty and security moves "A few" people over to the priority lane, just as long as they don't take up time and delay us because they don't know the procedures bringing things they aren't supposed to, packing the contents of their hand luggage as it comes out of the security scanner instead of taking the tub over to the tables... Just to name a few things. But I do find it amusing when the riff raffs give you the death stare for using priority security like I got from this lady. Yes I was wearing shorts and a polo shirt

Holding a surfboard in the boarding queue? I'd like to see someone get a surfboard into the overhead locker! ;)

Still, it would be a fun exercise to use the Premium lane wearing board shorts just waiting to be admonished by others in the PB queue who wrongly assume you're not meant to be there. Would be priceless to see the look on their faces when a Velocity Platinum card is flashed in their direction.

I was on a Continental flight HNL-LAX one time when a young kid was wandering around F with his body board, board shorts and T shirt.

Would be priceless to see the look on their faces when a Velocity Platinum card is flashed in their direction.
You are of course assuming they even know what a Velocity Platinum card looks like.

Priority Boarding at OOL? I wish! Sorry. I was talking about the checkin queue.

Normally people take their surfboard through security and give it to ground staff as they get onboard to store in the hold.

I've heard from a few people on Virgin that OOL has more platinums than any other city on Australia. You can thank Qantas for that!

I have to say as a regular from Surfboard City (thanks Liam :-) ) to Melbourne, the Priority checkin lane in Melbourne is about as quick as our non exsitant priority lane at Coolangatta Airport. Security in Melbourne are woeful rude and throw bags around. But hey thats 10 minutes out of my day the staff at Virgin make up for the cough at security.

Liam doesn't like board shorts 'cause his legs are too skinny! I can just imagine him "hangin' 10" with his board suspended between the luggage bins with occy straps .

Do ya reckon it'd be an objectional projectional object?? Now which movie did I see that.....umm, yes I remember.. one of the Lethal Weapon movies with the South Aficans..........

Sorry ozbeachbabe, Liam did actually mention premium check-in........not premium security nor premium boarding (no such luck for those latter two at OOL I'm afraid), but you did give me a good laugh

I'm a bit concerned you got that right, my legs are to thin and I don't like it... More importantly I don't dress that casually when I travel.

I have lived on the Gold Coast most of my life, and I've got no clue about that surfboard terminology you are using there.

It seems to be policed most times I've been through MEL.
(It's definitely been policed each time I've tried to use it on a non-premium fare :p)

I had cause to do that just the other day - I was looking resplendent in my dodgy sunnies, boardies, tshirt and thongs. Whilst queuing for Priority Check In I had 2 DJ reps (politely) and one fellow pax (not so politely) tell me that I was in the wrong queue.

I am off to HTI on Friday and can assure you I am not getting dressed up, if they come over to me I will get them to carry my 69kgs of Moet and Chandon that we are taking for the weekend (Plat had way and just re qualified)

LOL thats similar another AFFer's experience but at Qantas, where some Gold FF pushed ahead of him and said "excuse me we are QF Gold" and he "accidentally" flashed his Plat card, so the couple went to the back of the boarding queue.

Obviously we dont want non-premium pax using the premium screening lane when there are premium pax waiting behind them but as a side question, if the premium lane was completely empty would everyone here think its ok for security to move non-premiums into the premium lane to reduce the main queue? Or does this dilute its purpose (exclusivity)?

The Premium lane at MEL was staffed by a Virgin rep this morning at about 0640. My understanding is that it's only manned (ie enforced) during peak times which I would assume to be something like 0600-0800 and 1600-1800 or similar.

No way! Bring on the purple ropes and permanent door b*****. Don't want the peasantry getting a taste for freedom. They can't be trusted to not use it during peak times. Let them eat cake too!
