I was on an a DJ E190 the other day and had the pleasure of of boarding via the tarmac and noticed a fair number of cracks on the leading edges of the tail and wing tips. It appeared to be taped over with clear tape (like I'd go to town with duct tape over something, but it was clear).

It was a bit disconcerting and assume it's superficial cracking? Is it normal?

It's fairly normal - I've seen plenty of exterior wear and tear on aircraft. I've had the displeasure of flying Tiger a couple of times and the amount of cracks/dents on those things are pretty amazing. That said, safety is a huge issue in aviation and I should imagine if there would be any untoward repercussions they'd have the aircraft go tech,

Maybe it was just paint? Or could you see light through the cracks?

Tape is often used on aircraft to fix things before major maintenance, it's quite common.
