Had an interesting experience the other day using a voucher I had for a canceled flight. The voucher had a value of about $550 for two people, with $110 payable as a change fee for canceling the flights in the first place.

I choose the dates and times for the flights I wanted and got to the payment screen. The new flights were valued at roughly $200 more, leaving me $310 to pay. However the missus wasn't happy with one of the flights, so to appease her I hit the back page button and selected my new times, however when I got to the page that shows the costs, my voucher value had jumped from the original $550 to the exact fare of the new flights (which were about $820). Clicked on the payment screen and sure enough all it asked me to pay was the $110 change fee. 20 minutes later my e-ticket came through, so all looks good.

Not sure why this happened, but sure the hell am not complaining, unless of course I get to the airport only to find they want more money from me.

Good post ajw as voucher redemption falls mostly into "heads you lose and tails you lose" category as the prices offered to the voucher holder tend to be quite high. Well done!

Must admit before redeeming the voucher I did a flight search to see what the prices were, then did the booking redeeming the voucher and the exact same price options and prices came up. So maybe with Qantas's new price buckets things have changed. In my case I got the flights as discount economy (N class) for a reasonable price considering the days and time of day we are flying.

PS for those that don't know when you have a voucher it appears as a booking. To redeem you click on a link in the booking which then takes you to the search engine, then once your flights are selected the payment screen shows your voucher value, plus any cost difference and change fee's. Vouchers can only be used by the people on the original booking, and if two or more were flying on the original booking both must fly together on the redemption booking.
