Anyone got any experience with waitlisting for a J seat on TG?

I've got a PER-BKK mid next week in Y but am seriously looking at options. Points upgrade seems available at 35K points, but this seems a bit high (to me, 35000x3c=1050+ Y fare $540 = $1590 one way). Revenue one-way J is $2080. I've got no status with either *A or TG.

Anyone done this? Waited at the airport for the luck-of-the-draw? What sort of discount over full revenue is likely?

What fare class in Y is it? Thai are happy to sell upgrades at the airport so long as you are booked in Q class or better. In W/V you are not eligible. For PER-BKK it is $496 to upgrade. This is the best way to do it.

Thanks for the info, something to ponder for future flights. Unfortunately I'm on a W class ticket.

Full Y is about $1000, so to add $496 to that brings me back up to around the $1500 mark, this must be the bar to hit as award redemptions and point upgrades (all assuming 3c/FF point) seem to hit roughly the same mark ... $1500ish.

Its not a bad price tbh, might ring them tomorrow and see what options I have with a W class ticket, might transfer some Amex points if its the only way ... running out of time here though :)

It may only cost $100 more to move from W to Q class, call your agent or thai if booked directly with them. FYI Q class is the minimum to earn 100% mileage on FF programs with TG international sectors. Q class ex-East coast can usually be had for approx $1100-$1200 return whilst W/V are $900-$1100

Still ask about the paid for upgrade at check in as the restrictions on the booking class is quite recent and some stations have been known to still offer the paid upgrade on the cheaper fares.

Coming back to this thread to offer some more data.

Yes, indeed, at checkin you might be able to upgrade a "Q" class Y ticket to J. From PER-BKK the quoted price was $495. As already mentioned I couldn't upgrade my W class fare though and was advised I'd have to ring the local Thai office to upgrade W to Q if I wanted to then upgrade to J - sounds like it would be possible, but I was actually at the busy check-in desk and didn't want the hassle.

I'd have to work through the numbers to see if there is really much saving. I think full flex (Q) was somewhere around $1000 from PER, add $495 and I guess J fare would come in at circa $1500. Full revenue J ticket was a tad over $2000 from memory, so, 25% off potentially (one way fares quoted)
