I reserved a room at a Best Western as it appeared to be the nicest stay in the town. It has a "going" rate of around $150 on the last minute sites but appeared to be booked out. However I checked the Best Western website and luckily it had a room available and even better I was able to use a corporate code to book at $117.
On arrival (admittedly only about 3 hours after booking) I was told quite bluntly bad luck we're full.
The attendant said he had been "trying all afternoon" to block out rooms on the Best Western site. He had my details already printed in front of him but had made no effort to call me.
He then called another motel down the street, booked a room, and sent me on my way. He appeared to be either the owner or manager but really didn't think it was any big deal at all... Hang on a sec, I asked, how much will they charge me? $120 he replied (when I could have booked the same room at the going rate of $105 online). Then he offered to give me $3 if I wasn't able to "talk down" the other motel to $117.
What's your take on this? Is this normal? Should I complain to Best Western? Should I expect any compensation?
