Lets make this post a sticky and get started. I have tried in SYD and BNE and cant find any, i am sure they exist, but where??

The only free ones you will find are in the vicinity of certain lounges, no sticky required :).

The only free WIFI points is just near the lounges... Some airports offer WIFI but you have to pay for it on a either time or amount of data type arrangement.

Good idea but not going to be available as airports want to make money from everything possible...

ADL terminal free wifi from internode. I think also for DRW - can anyone confirm?

ADL, DRW, and NTL are all free node! I think Optus also offer free WiFi in SYD at the DJ gates.

Is the network outside the CL in BNE any better than the network in the QP/J lounges? Could be worth sitting out that way if so.

I used to see posters from Nab around the terminals stating that they were providing free WiFi in those terminals (eg SYD T3). Never managed to find those networks though.

Quite often come across the old "Free Public WiFi" though - for anyone who doesn't already know, this is what they are (ie not free or public, but a Windows bug):

What "Free Public WiFi" Is and Why You Should Avoid It

BNE Domestic:

Network name: "The_Lounge"
Needs password: No, you just need to click the "I accept" button on the first page that you load
Intended users: VA Lounge guests
Can also be accessed: When sitting at Gate 41 (not in the Lounge), from Cafe du Wings in the VA arrivals area, outside on the taxi road near the cab ranks and up to the Aus Post mailboxes, and also on the chairs between the taxi road and the pre-booked transport road, at the Virgin end.

Network name: "Airtrain_Hotspot"
Needs password: No, you just need to click the "I accept" button on the first page that you load
Intended users: AirTrain customers waiting at the platform or on the train before departure
Can also be accessed: from about the Jetstar area down to the very end of the Virgin pick-up/drop-off road, as well as on the taxi and pre-booked transport roads, and (when completed/land re-opened), parts of the short-term car park close to the AirTrain station.

BNE International:

Network name: "Airtrain_Hotspot"
Needs password: No, you just need to click the "I accept" button on the first page that you load
Intended users: AirTrain customers waiting at the platform or on the train before departure
Can also be accessed: in the areas surrounding the station

SYD Domestic:

Network name: "Virgin_Lounge"(??)
Needs password: No, you just need to click the "I accept" button on the first page that you load
Intended users: VA Lounge guests
Can also be accessed: in the areas immediately surrounding the DJ lounge

SYD Domestic & International:

Network name: Sydney Airport free wi-fi??? (I don't remember the exact name)
Needs password: No, however you need to enter in your flight number (or purpose at the airport), as well as another couple of quick questions, such as whether you are a business/leisure traveler etc)
Availability: In almost all areas of the terminal.
Drawbacks: If you are walking around while connected to the wi-fi network (such as on an iPod/iPad), you will need to re-answer all of the questions whenever you move to an area covered by a different router (although the network details remain the same)... gets slightly annoying after a while haha!
Notes: Ignore the Telstra and Optus networks in the terminal - they aren't free!

For the iOS crowd, there's an app called Wi-Fi Finder (free on app store). Has a comprehensive list of free access points globally, and allows you to store and access the database locally without a network connection.
