Got a strange situation here:

Flight #1: Flying ex. SYD - CBR for a meeting then in the afternoon will fly Flight #2: ex. CBR-SYD-BKK for leisure. Both flights, for a variety of reasons are booked under different PNR but with Qantas.

In the morning at SYD checking in - am I able to check through my baggage to BKK and "forget about it" or will I have to check-in seperately at CBR for the eventual flight to BKK? If I can check through at SYD, does it mean that my baggage will go SYD - CBR - SYD - BKK or will it just stay in SYD and go to BKK at night?

Interesting situation that I have never encountered before.

I have a feeling you may not be able to check in at SYD the first time and then go SYD-CBR-SYD-BKK. You'll have to go SYD-CBR with your bag, then check in again at CBR all the way to BKK.

There's something about routing rules for bags that you can't have the point of origin listed on the tag (i.e. check-in at SYD, then have SYD appear on the tag).

What you could probably do is check-in to CBR, then claim at CBR, grab what you need (if applicable), then check-in to BKK at CBR before you leave the airport. Then when you go and come back, you're ready to rock and roll. (I assume this will be possible, i.e. CBR won't mind checking you in despite the long lead time).

About 12 months ago I flew from BNE to TSV to BNE onto CBR all in one day.

I had about 8 hours in TSV as it was a work day and CBR that night was holidays for a long weekend.

I had to take my bag off at TSV and have it for the day and then could book it in that night when flying to CBR via BNE.

I tried to book it all straight through in BNE in the morning and it could not be done. The girl was getting other people to try and help but then a surpervisor come and said no can do.

It doesn't matter whether the above flights are in the same pnr or three different ones, you cannot have a bag tag where the one city appears twice on the bag tag eg SYD/CBR/SYD or SYD/CBR/SYD/BKK.

Think about it, ultimately if your bag is to go SYD/BKK why would you want to send it unecessarily SYD/CBR/SYD first? It doesn't achieve anything.

When you checkin at SYD domestic you will get a bag tag SYD/CBR. It's probably a good thing you don't have the other flights in that pnr otherwise it wouldn't let you use the Next Gen bag drop with international flights in the booking. When you collect your bag in CBR see if you can check it in then CBR/xSYD/BKK.

Don't forget as a WP you can use the Premium checkin queue as you'll need to tell the checkin person about the separate booking SYD/BKK so they can link the flights & therefore through check your bag to BKK & most likely give you both your boarding passes.
