Card Offers Westpac Altitude Black offers: 120,000 Qantas or Velocity Points (expires 30/4/25)

What's the cheapest way to get the lounge passes through spending on Qantas products and services? I already have a Qantas flight booked but can't seem to find anything I can pay for extra on that booking short of perhaps upgrading to business which costs more than the lounge passes are worth..

You could pay for an exit row?

Paying for any seat selection would work or buy a qantas voucher for later.
Seat selections on Qantas are free besides the exit row though. I'll check out the vouchers. I remember a few years ago it was possible to buy points down to $10 or $20 which meant an eligible spend. Is that still the case?

It seems like flights are really the only thing that qualifies anyway, according to the Westpac website:

Selected Qantas products and services are the following items purchased directly from Qantas: Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number), Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees.

A $50 voucher would probably work though.

Also don't forget you have to register on the Westpac site as well as making the required Qantas spend:

And if you upgraded to Business you wouldn't need the lounge passes for that flight anyway as if you're flying Business you're entitled to lounge access before that flight.

Only reason I'm keen on the lounge passes is because I can flog them off on Gumtree for $$. Don't need them myself for when I fly. Nice little bonus on top of a fee free card

Well now the passes are digital QF will be able to see that you have a lot of different "friends" that you transfer the passes to.

Unless your "friends" also get gifted other passes from lots of other "friends". Seems risky for a few bucks given QF could cancel your FF membership.

In the terms on the offer page:

Rewards Points: The earning and redemption of Altitude Points and Qantas Points is subject to the Altitude Rewards and Altitude Qantas Terms and Conditions. Purchases that are not eligible to earn Rewards Points are set out in the Altitude Rewards Terms and Conditions. For example: payments to the Australian Taxation Office, cash advances, BPAY and BPAY equivalent transactions do not earn Reward Points. You do not receive points if your card account is in arrears for 2 consecutive statement cycles and in other circumstances.

https://www.westpac.com.au/content/...credit-cards/Altitude_Rewards_Terms_and_1.pdf

Relevant section:
6.2 Qantas Points are not earned in respect of the following amounts that may be charged to the Card Account:
• government charges (other than GST payable in connection with the purchase of goods or services on which you earn Qantas Points);
• ATO payments; i.e. payments using your Altitude Qantas Visa Card or Mastercard®; Altitude Qantas Platinum Visa Card or Mastercard; Altitude Qantas Platinum Plus Visa Card or Mastercard; and Altitude Qantas Black World Mastercard® designated as an ATO payment or Card Payment Fee;
• interest and other bank fees and charges (including any GST payable on any of these);
• Cash Advances;
• (unless your card is an Altitude Business Qantas Gold Card) any spend deemed by us to be for business purposes, which includes, but is not limited to, transactions that relate to the conduct of a business, use of your Card to make purchases that are business-related (including any expenditure of a personal business nature) or use of your Card to purchase goods or services that are not used wholly or predominantly for personal, domestic or household purposes;
• balance transfers;
• BPAY® payments; i.e. bill payments and other payments made through the BPAY Electronic Payments Scheme

The reason it was interesting to me is that government charges is normally lumped in with ATO (ie federal govt), but the person on the phone explicitly referred to council rates and bill payments at Australia post (which IME used to always count only as purchases). I'm aware that say on the amex they normally result in lower earn rates; but wanted to make sure people were aware I was told they don't count towards the bonus point offer as well.

Yes one has to keep on your toes as each card is often quite different, and not just for zero earn but for reduced earn.

My new Virgin Money Card is also very strict (actually stricter!!!). Check out all of these exclusions, including many that people would think would be covered!!!

any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, bank fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges and government related transactions. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semi-government entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs)

I always make sure I read the terms of any new card, and then as between my wife and I we are often churning multiple cards we work out what spend goes on which "churner" card vs on which of the "keeper" cards.

Looks like Westpac have fixed their system up. Just got my bonus points a couple of days after my second statement so now I can cancel and move on.

It seems the majority of Gumtree customers are once off purchasers in need of the pass or two. I'm not sure many are serial abusers that might attract Qantas' attention. And in the remote chance Qantas did investigate, there would be no way they could determine that the passes were sold without sifting through your bank account details. This is Qantas, not the Stasi.

The reference was to the new digital passes and not the old paper ones. With digital it would not be that difficult to have tracking if they wanted to.

I understood you were referring to electronic passes. My point still stands. Unless one bloke is buying all the lounge on gumtree and is flagged by Qantas (which isn't the case) how can Qantas determine if someone has transferred their lounge passes in a manner that is contrary to the T&Cs?

Was not my post....

My point was just that they could track the digital passes if they wanted to and would not need to sift through bank records as per your post. digital could lead to people being flagged who have repeated use but who have not earned them.

No I doubt that Qantas would do it. But it is possible if they want to with the digital passes.

PS I have sold the paper passes as I get more than I can use.

The bank records line was about Qantas being able to prove that money is bring exchanged for passes which seemed to be the concern that was expressed. Without that evidence, there's no smoking gun. Now I wouldn't sell passes but good luck to those who do.
