I am booking a return flight and want to ensure I have the best chance of a complimentary upgrade to the 777 Prem Economy that used to come standard but no longer seems to

Is it best to book Air NZ with Virgin Plat on the 777 or VA codeshare on the 777 ?

It is highly unlikely you'll get a complimentary upgrade to PY as this is sold as a product now on the Tasman. The only chance would be if economy was over-sold, in which case I don't think it'd make a difference if you booked on NZ code or VA code.

They stopped offering HVC seating in PE ~ October 2015.

Otherwise yeah it depends on economy being oversold which doesn't happen very often at all so I'd plan to sit in the seat you book. If you need the VA eligible sectors then go for that, otherwise I tend to go for whichever website is cheaper.

If you book Y with NZ, the minimum bid from Y to Y+ was $100, though the last time I flew that sector, it was full. So plan to bid a little extra.

NZ do a much better job than VA, including recognising VA status. Personally I would go with whichever is more convenient or cheaper for a short flight.

Book with (A)NZ and fly with (A)NZ on their flight number.
I once made a booking with VA but using (A)NZ plane, VA must have chucked me off the (A)NZ flight and put me on their their own plane.
Got an exit row seat with empty seat next to me, but I was not happy that I got moved from a 777 to a 737!
Not saying you won't get moved from a 777 to a 737, or sometimes a 787 if they choose to put that on, to a 737, but less chances if all your flights are purely on (A)NZ booking system.
I have flown (A)NZ in premY and in subclass of J too, on the (A)NZ 777 and subclass of J on their 767, very good service, herringbone seating takes a bit of getting used to!
