What are you allowed to take with you from a hotel breakfast buffet?

There's quite a bit of discussion about what "freebies" you can take with you from a hotel room.

But what about items from the hotel's breakfast buffet?

With 1,000s of hotel breakfast buffet experiences, I've seen a few examples of some "interesting" hotel customer behaviour.

I think there's a couple of things that are always fine:

- If there are take-away cups at the coffee machine, a take-away coffee etc is fine.

- And a piece of whole fruit, one per person, is probably fine too.

But filling your own empty 1.5l water bottle with juice etc is probably not fine. And filling your own take-away container with some food for later is probably not fine either.

I risk taking a small bakery item or two. I often ask about it and so far, that's been OK too. Sometimes even with an offer to put it in a small box!

I behave the same way with buffet dining whether it’s an independent restaurant or hotel cafe. Generally therule is that the Only food allowed out is in your stomach

I ask if I want to take something, but do not expect a yes response.

I am often surprised at how people justify taking food from a buffet meal. The waste, the cost of the meal, the entitlement etc.

If there is a sign that ask/tell people not to takeaway, or the staff say no, then it’s that.

There are plenty of food wasted in commercial setting, but doesn’t justify stealing food. People can do dumpster diving to get their takeaway (although even that can be legally contentious)

Ok the righteous and the entitled, do your worst

Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh has breakie take away containers (we didnt ask for this, it was offered when we were leaving) and encouraged us to help ourselves 🤣. By memory we took bananas and a couple of pastries

Edit, found my post about it
