What happens if you tick “yes” to respiratory symptoms when you check in?

I’m travelling for work, due to fly home tomorrow, and have come down with a cold. Negative for COVID, so I am wrestling with my conscience. If I tick, “yes, I have respiratory symptoms” when I check in, what happens? Do they verify that I’m COVID negative, ask me to wear a mask and let me on? Give me a flight credit and ask me to reschedule? Not allow boarding and make me buy a new ticket?

Could you call the airline you are booked on? Equally important is how you feel. Is the trip, say, CBR-SYD or MPN to FCO? I am not sure what respiratory symptoms mean, but if you are coughing and wheezing, will bother others and may need oxygen, then I probably wouldn't fly.

I'd like to ask the opposite. What are the repercussions if you tick no and you have a cold (yes done the PCR test through GP)

I'm fine. I just have a cold with a cough. But the app still does ask you to declare that you don't have this type of symptom (potential COVID symptoms) when you check in.

There are lots of rules everywhere to protect administrators and organisations when things go wrong. It is a case of exercising common sense and being reasonable within the bounds of polite consideration. You ought to be best to decide what that is.

Back in the day we used to cough to hide a fart, but that all changed once COVID hit and the reverse became true - so I would recommend a good vindaloo or something like that tonight so as you can hide your coughs tomorrow - and hopefully I won't be on your flights tomorrow!

Does it really matter?

We spent a 9 hour Scoot flight SYD-SIN with a young girl near us coughing non-stop. Mum clearly aware and did nothing. Not even put a mask on the young girl.

If I've learnt anything since Covid is people truly do not care for anyone other than themselves. That is human nature. "I'm OK and that's all that matters".

But in the case of the OP they know it is just a common cold and don't want to risk being stranded. No way I would tick yes.

After a recent trip to the EU, on every plane, train, bus, ferry people were coughing everywhere

I know some fit Europeans who have been struck down by nasty bugs recently—this has been a particularly harsh season.

I always carry flu tabs, nasal spray, antibiotics, and throat gargle in my streamlined carry-on. A face covering can be protective. The aircraft ventilation systems are excellent, and the airport exposure would be the most dangerous part of the trip.

If you have respiratory symptoms a properly fitted N95 should protect others around you; if you're worried about picking something up then the same applies for your personal protection.

Of course on longer flights it becomes more of a challenge for eating/drinking etc but for the short domestic hops it shouldn't be an issue.

Certainly not one of those people who thinks we need to mask in most places but a good fitting N95 can still be useful in certain specific situations.

Surgical and cloth masks are theatre though, bizarre to see people care enough to wear them voluntarily but equally not caring enough to keep up to date with the science on this.

Science? What science? That they've checked what effect masks have on every single person? I wear a mask in public, especially places with a lot of people such as shopping centres and supermarkets.

Here's 2 undeniable facts that will never make me change my mind regardless of what "experts" like you think

- I have not had Covid
- I've not had the flu or any lasting cold in the past 4 years

There is absolutely no reason to stop doing what I am doing because the "experts" think they know something I don't know. Most people are stupid and do not care enough about others around them. Me wearing a mask voluntarily should not concern you or anyone else.

Okay John, submit your n=1 study to the New England Journal of Medicine, I’m sure they’ll be fascinated.

Not sure why you’re adopting such an odd tone for a post that wasn’t addressed to you. I’m not concerned with what people do, just passing comment.

If people want to wear an N95 to the supermarket it likely will work well. If people wear a surgical mask it most likely won’t be much better than not wearing anything at all.

Supermarkets aren’t particularly high risk transmission environments. If you haven’t caught any respiratory viruses in four years it probably says more that you don’t spend much time in higher risk environments.

Bars, restaurants and other crowded indoor settings are far more likely to be sites where one can catch Covid and often impractical places to be wearing any kind of mask. People in higher risk occupations or with young kids in daycare/schools again at higher risk. Your supermarket surgical mask is very likely not making much difference to your overall risk.

Please cough for me one more time.
