Well the RTW trip is almost here - 30 days and counting

Finally

Which gives me a huge list of things to do.

This got me wondering - whats the funniest/most disastrous/saddest thing you have ever left behind when travelling?

Anyone ever lost a spouse for example? Or bought a tasty bottle of whisky only to leave it lonesome on a departure lounge chair

I'll extend travel to planes, trains, automobiles and ships for more options

Going camping and forgetting the tent and sleeping bags I think tops it for non-flying!
My son managed to go away with us on holidays and take no shoes/footwear (8 years old then).

Flying I don't think there's much - never the tickets (in the olden days) or the passports, credit cards or money.

Battery charger for the phone and camera battery is one thing you can miss though. Remember those!

Hi all,

Many years ago I left all my duty free in the PER Golden Wing Club prior to leaving for HK.

New electric shaver/alcohol/camera.

One phone call from the plane to mum and all was retreived the next day from Golden Wing at the Dom airport after they transferred it for me.

Disaster of a trip.

Back in the AN days I cashed in some points for a NZ J class MEL-CHC return.

a) Got to airport, go through immigration to realise i'd left duty free bag in back of car (back in days where duty free stores did still exist outside the airport) and I was carrying some sunglasses for a friend. Fortunately, NZ managed to arrange for my friend to drop bag off (he'd given me a lift to the airport) and bring it through to the lounge for me.

b) Left wallet at home in the early morning haze. Not enough time to get it to me, so had to have it DHL'd overnight to me, minus cash (they wouldn't allow a wallet with cash to be sent). Fortunately, the taxi driver in CHC was more than happy to come get the fare the next day (I explained the situation as I got in the cab and he had no problem at all!)

c) Arrived back in CHC to checkin for MEL flight to be told "sorry sir your flight was yesterday". The amazing NZ J checkin staff at CHC managed to wrangle me a J fare on the flight back, and I got home in one piece.

Apart from that, not really forgotten much. The odd thing here or there, but as a rule, nothing that can't be bought at the other end (when I remember my wallet, of course!)

Oh and last year I did forget my passport in NZ. Was on the way to the airport when I realised I had left it in the hotel safe. Fortunately, the room had not been cleaned and they escorted me back to my room to get it. Good thing I left plenty of time to get to the AKL QP!

Must be something about NZ and being forgetful for me!

Forgot to bring any Vegemite on my current trip.

Couldn't find any in SIN, but was fortunate I found it in HKG.

Two things you must never forget are your sense of humour and sense of adventure. With them you can cope with almost everything.

The most recent "forget" was my husband

actually more like lost.

We were in Malaysia trying to get a bus to a national park, eventually we figured out we were in the wrong place waiting for it.

He took off to find the bus stop, and then came back to find me (he moves fast!). In the busy market we lost each other completely

eventually he got smart and headed to the bus stop he had found. There I was - waiting.

And the kicker - the place we were originally waiting was a stop on-route - so it would have been fine.

Oh I like NZ its easy to get forgetful there - VERY relaxing

My trousers.

Not quite as interesting as it sounds though. I was traveling on Sunday night for a Monday meeting, so naturally I was dressed quite casually. It was late on Sunday night by the time I realised I forgot to pack them, which meant I had to go to my meeting in jeans.

Not a good look, but nothing else could be done.

Friend of mine landed at his home airport with a brand new Nikon SLR (film as it was before the digital days). Loaded all bags onto a trolley, went to the car and loaded the boot.

Yep, left the whole new camera kit on the top basket of the trolley and drove home.

Went back as soon as he noticed and it had long gone.

I managed to leave a bag containing digital SLR, passports and paper tickets in the bag of a taxi in Tahiti when we were going to the airport. I still find it remarkable that we got it back within about 15 minutes.

Wow, that's totally amazing that you got it back! Well done.

honeymoon, whitsundays - missing bathing attire

Was this on purpose?

One trip I went to Melbourne I took the camera but forget to put the battery back in it after leaving it to charge. :(

Last year I packed the camera with battery and charger; but I packed the wrong charger; both cameras are Sony just the battery size is different; problem sorted now as there is a big sticker on the charger saying which is which.

I guess there are always little items I should have packed but more often than not there are some items I should have left at home.

7.30 in the morning (very early when you're a uni student...) receive a call from my partner of the time...

'Um Hi I'm in Detroit and I left my wallet at home...'

My ex had managed to get all the way to Detroit without noticing their wallet was still in Melbourne... is he the only traveller who could spend time at the airport not needing coffee/water/food?

So I had to go into the city, collect the wallet from his housemate, get a cab out to his workplace and give it to a mutual friend who also works there, they passed it onto a colleague who happened to also be flying to Detroit the next day.... Lucky I say!

In the meantime I managed to replace the wallet (as it was a coughpy old one) as a surprise birthday present....

Luckily a friend of his living there had an old but still active Aus bank account where my ex could transfer money and then take out at an ATM using their friends account...

Of all the things to forget, I think your wallet is probably the worst (esp if you dont realise until you get there!)

Lets just say that he never lived down that mistake...

greenfrog86,

That one must take the prize. Like a few others I have left my Passport home but then that become very obvious, very quickly :!:

Got to the snow (only half an hour drive from home) to find my DH had only packed ONE of my ski boots in the car. Didn't ski that day as it was a weekend and it would have taken til midday to return home and join the traffic back up the mountain only to have to park miles from the resort!!!

We now count boots, skis, poles, gloves, helmets etc etc etc before we leave home!

+1 for the camera battery charger. Got to New York only to find it was ME who had forgotten to pack it ;). Off to a discount electronics store to buy a US$40 generic replacement which solved the problem.

I had forgotten my passport at home on the way to the airport for a flight to Auckland. I was in a taxi in the M5 East tunnel and had to get back out of the tunnel, go back home and collect passport and then back through the M5 East tunnel to airport. I was already running a little late to start with and only just made check-in for the flight. Funny thing was the flight departed around an hour late. Expensive taxi trip also.

On a recent trip to Thailand I had forgotten to pack my sneakers. Very hard to find half decent sneakers in large foot size in Thailand at short notice as I was playing golf the next day.

I have also forgotten clothes, medication, gifts and other small things over the years.

I very stupidly forgot my briefcase on a shuttle bus from Sheraton Hotel Heathrow to LHR.

I realised as soon as I put my bags on the trolley.

Never saw it again. Contained Several $100s AUD Cash, My ipod, phone charger, SD cards with all my holiday pics and my UK passport.

FAIL :-(
