I am intending to hire a car from Hertz for 16 days in England in August. I am wondering what discount codes I am entitled to use. I have played around with some to see what offer the best discounts;

Amex Platinum 211762 / 633306 - supposedly a 10% discount. Cheapest by less than 1% but treats last day as 28hours which can save 1 days rental.

Flying Blue 1393439 / Visa Classic 618583 - supposedly 15% discount and less than 1% more expensive than Amex Platinum.

Amex 705500 - supposedly 10% discount and 6.5% more expensive than Amex Platinum.

Mastercard 795091 - seems to give no discount and 18.5% more expensive than Amex Platinum.

I have a couple of Amex cards but neither are platinum. I have no Visa cards except the ING debit card but have multiple Mastercards. I am an (inactive) member of the KLM/AF Flying Blue program. I am also a member of Hertz Gold Plus Rewards but have not hired from Hertz for several years.

I don't know whether Hertz validate your entitlement to use a code or not. I am looking for advice on which codes I would be entitled to use or which are fairly safe to use. Thanks in advance.

Try this M/C code as well 1795034
Thank you. This generates identical results to Flying Blue 1393439 / Visa Classic 618583. System recognises it as MASTERCARD WORLD ELITE. Do you know if it has any qualifications apart from renter having to have a Mastercard?

Thank you. This actually uses the 795091 CDP.

If you try and book as a guest you get quoted rates in GBP that are almost identical to Flying Blue 1393439 / Visa Classic 618583 / Mastercard World Elite 1795034 for Pay Now but are much more expensive for Pay Later.

If you try and book as a member it quotes rates in AUD and GBP that are the same as Mastercard 795091 (i.e no discount).

I'm not sure why you are wanting to rent from Hertz, but from my recent experience at LHR, you should expect to be offered an EV (with no alternative), irrespective of what you book. I was forced to take a PoleStar 2 when I wanted a small petrol car. Range anxiety won the day by a huge margin, I'm afraid.

All good if that's what you're after, as you can get it at a good rate if you book a sub-compact.

I am not that keen on Hertz but my research suggests they have the best rates for when I want to rent. Some of the rates quoted by others are eye-watering. I will be picking up from London City airport and won’t be happy with an EV.

I had a small non EV from AVIS LHR last year. I was expecting a 1 Class upgrade but nothing. Went to Cornwall and back no worries….

Yes, Avis is fine, but not Hertz IMHO. Trust me.

Avis prestige will probably be cheaper than any booking now for August

Sixt are great as well
I actually missed the “August” bit. That could be fun that close.

I always put in an AVIS placeholder booking immediately after making flight bookings.

I made a few dummy bookings for March/April 2024 a few months back and prices have nearly doubled already!

Except if you want a Tesla ....

My AVIS corp rate tends not to vary much but you will get “No cars available” several weeks (or months!) out at “Downtown” locations. Pickup/return from an airport is usually much safer (he says with 3 immanent bookings in Portugal & Spain - all “downtown” offices.

Ah sorry, wife has it with Citi Prestige M/C, which is World Elite, so maybe it is only applicable for that tier of MC

The rental car market is ripe for disruption which is why I was pleased to try Virtuo in March and will use them again this European summer. Hopefully they take off and do well.

In an act of serendipity I came across and booked a Merc GLA 2020 from Virtuo yesterday. Pickup from Kings Cross was 18 pounds a day cheaper than their other pickup points! I will do a bit more research before cancelling my Hertz booking.

I booked a GLB from LHR earlier in the year and was very happy!

I'm looking for a car in Strasbourg between Xmas and New Year, not a great time to be hiring. Any ideas for a code to use, have tried the usual mastercard/Amex codes with little luck. Have found a Car & Driver code takes about 35% off, as far as I can tell that's for Car & Driver magazine so not sure how they would police validity (and you can join for $15 US anyway).

Any other ideas (or codes for other companies, I'm not wedded to Hertz (though I do have Gold preferred its not worth much).
