When Ansett was for sale, SIA and Air NZ both made bids for the airline. What if SIA bid was successful? Would Ansett still be here today?

Arguably yes, because the problem with Air NZ buying Ansett was Ansett was the larger company of the two and it's losses could not be leveraged by the smaller Air NZ. Singapore airlines was a larger company and would have been able to withstand the financial strains of Ansett while it was reconfigured.

Short answer No. Long answer, no as even if they could have saved AN, which I doubt, they would have rebranded by now so the name would still be gone.

After nearly 10 years I am still amazed when people ponder questions like this.

From a marketing prospective I doubt they would have dropped the Ansett name of the Australian Domestic arm. Most likely they would have rebranded the international arm though.

Too many what ifs ..... What if QF were bought out by private equity a few years ago?!

QF would probably have sunk in the GFC, while the merry bunch of senior managers and board members would have headed off into the sunset with a swag of money.

Which would have left us with Virgin Blue and Tiger slugging it out

What if Compass Mk 1 had the right aircraft and terminal space, what if Compass Mk2 actually had capital, what if Impulse did not have its funding pulled by the Singaporean Government investment arm, lots of questions that will never have an answer, pointless really to speculate on the past!

BTW it was only 50% of Ansett for sale to SQ, AirNZ had already bought 50% after they failed to get QF, taking TNTs stake which gave them pre-emptive rights to News Corps share should it come up !

Which ultimately would have, just this week, left us with Virgin Australia!

Ahh. So good question. Would they have changed from a LCC, moved upmarket? Or would we have the old Virgin Blue, with inflated prices.

Virgin wouldn't know what to do if they had a monopoly. ;)

There would be a heap of people who blame SQ for killing their points instead of AirNZ.
